Can we explain what we believe?
The foundation of the Christian faith, along with the hope of eternal salvation in the next life, is based on the torturous death and glorified ressurection of the only perfect individual we know as Jesus Christ. When we trust that His sacrificial blood is the only payment for our forgiveness and our hope for redemption, we become reborn, a new spiritual creation within His family and kingdom. Do you believe that trusting in this God-man is the greatest demonstration of love the world has ever known? Since this miraculous event happened over 2000 years ago, do you know why you believe these promises are true?
Let’s go a little further, have you ever had a life-changing encounter with this person who is called the Son of God? Did you know that just believing there is a God, or that Jesus is real is NOT the same thing as giving all of your heart, mind, and soul to Him? Pastors are not the only ones who are called to explain and teach God’s word, every person who has invited Christ to be their Lord and Savior should spend every available moment focusing on Him and getting to know Him more intimately through prayer and study. This is how His children become His fearless, wise, mighty, and overcoming warriors.
In the last 100 years, there has been an increasing amount of people who have been interested in researching the Bible. I’m not referring to those who want to draw closer to God, but rather the progressive intellectuals who try to refute and disprove what is written. These are not your casual readers that accept what someone says on the surface and are satisfied with the idea of just believing by faith. Similar to how those who must prove everything according to science, these individuals are intense and seek more difficult answers than are discussed in church classes. In fact, if one of these agnostics were to present their views in church, most would be considered a heretic or worse.
I have several friends around the country, and we have interesting discussions about God and the Bible. Like I mentioned, we have many questions about Christianity that often are left to speculation. I’ve read some of the textual critics who take pride in being able to pin a preacher against the wall who has been in Christian leadership most of his life. I’m writing this small article not to discourage you who are followers of Christ, but to blow the trumpet of warning about how important it is to know what we believe. Especially in the last 60 years, while the nominal Christians have been spiritually asleep, these scholars have been hard at work trying to see if what the text says is actually correct. I know that many will say, that’s a huge waste of time and is offensive to those who trust God, but how can we condemn those who have sincerely given their lives to researching every jot and tittle of the Bible?
It’s one thing to know what something says, and it’s another thing to explain what it means. This is true with the Bible, as there are individuals who have memorized what is written, but do they know how to translate the original languages into our modern English? For example, I’m not saying that I agree with what Bart Ehrman teaches, but he is recognized as a highly respected Biblical scholar who focuses on the textual criticism of the New Testament, the historical Jesus, and the origins and development of early Christianity. For anyone to debate him on Biblical topics, they would need to bring their A-game of theological research, and not just answers like, “I believe this because that’s what my grandmother said.”
My point is that all Christians should not only stand for their convictions, but to be able to prove why they accept and trust them. The reason why all Christians are not dedicated theologians is because it’s much easier to accept a meal than to cook one. Most people say I do not have time to study the Bible, while spending several hours a day watching TV and playing on their phones. I encourage every follower to take a scholarly approach to understanding religious texts included with their faith-based views so they can be instant in season and out of season to give an answer. II Timothy 2:15 is not only about gaining knowledge, it’s taking the time to rightly divide His word and be enlightened by God’s divine revelation.

Knowing God through His word
Even with something as simple as praying and reading the Bible every day, it’s a challenge even to those who are determined and sincerely seeking God’s divine guidance. As a Christian writer and teacher, I encourage everyone to make time and find the secret place of God’s presence where they can spend quality moments alone with Him. I’ve noticed a huge difference between reading non-religious books and reading the Bible. There is no resistance when reading novels and ordinary books, but when we read and study the Bible, alarms sound, and the atmosphere changes as it draws the attention of dark spiritual forces.
I realize some believe this is silly and there is no such thing as invisible entities trying to hinder us, but when we make a vow to obey Christ, we not only face hostility from our carnal nature, but also aggressive attacks from demonic enemies who oppose God. I’m not condemning those who read secular books, watch movies, or play video games, etc.., but would you be surprised if I told you that I know church members who have confessed they never read the Bible? How can a Christian know God personally or understand what He requires if we refuse to read or study His word? What about passages such as Matthew 4:4? “But Jesus answered and said, it is written, man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.”
Are there individuals who can spend significant amounts of time entertaining themselves while also being devoted to daily prayer and Bible study? The concern comes when the hours people spend on their phones, internet, and television add up to be significantly more than the time they spend in prayer and absorbing God’s instructions. There was a time when statements like this were respected as truth and brought conviction to the listener. However, as compromising is more popular today than ever, lame excuses are now justified as legitimate reasons. As the religious continue to fall into the snare traps of rebellion, denial, and deception, we now commonly hear people declare how they do not want anyone meddling in their personal business.
Lately, we’ve been talking about our responsibility to engage in intercessory prayer and spiritual warfare, and we cannot overemphasize how critical this is to those who have a passion to be an overcomer for Christ. Since God has explained the symbolism of our spiritual armor mentioned in Ephesians chapter six, we are left to ponder why a person who says they are a servant of God would ignore it. Why is it that some church-goers assume the pastor and elders do the work of the ministry while the average pew sitter is exempt? Many believe that if they contribute money to the church, this is all they need to do. However, if a person is truly saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, they also have ears to hear what God’s Spirit is telling them to do. Every Christian has been given the gifts, talents, anointing, authority, and the fruits of the Holy Spirit, which means we are commanded to walk, work, and obey His voice. We read in I Corinthians 12:4-6, Matthew 28:15-20, Acts 1:8, and II Corinthians 3:5-6, that as the Lord’s disciples, we are responsible for doing the work of ministry, and be constantly aware of His presence.
Every thought and deed should be a reflection of God’s love and grace, and if it is not, we are guilty of the sins of omission. I Peter 4:10 is not a suggestion. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” Choosing to live in denial and only think happy thoughts does not mean the spiritual war between light and darkness is not raging all around us. Thomas Gray, an eighteenth-century poet, declared, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you,” but we know this reveals the immaturity and deception of those who take comfort in false security. It’s probable the devil would not need to waste his time hindering lukewarm religious individuals, as they are no real threat to his agenda. In fact, they are helping promote Satan’s twisted and distorted philosophies. It’s the devoted and obedient follower of Jesus who reads their Bibles and intercedes, and are engaged on the front-lines of spiritual combat. The dark side fears the children of God as demons know that greater is He that lives in us than he that is in the world.

The easy way is not God’s way
Seeking comfort and not being willing to stand against sin leaves us lukewarm and vulnerable to defeat and destruction. Christians who avoid getting their hands dirty with prayer and obedience might have religious knowledge, but are developing spiritual muscle atrophy. If we stay on the couch and only eat rich foods and dream of pleasures, before long, we will not be strong enough to take care of ourselves. This is what happens in the spirit realm when the only outward sign of being a Christian is talking “about” God. Many do not read or study the Bible on their own and just remember what someone else has said. Why? Because they are lazy and have anxiety that the Lord is going to demand them to give up everything they have and follow Him. Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell the story of a rich young ruler who spoke to Jesus about how he could obtain eternal life. It’s common to feel pity when we only see this as a selfish, arrogant person who would rather remain in control of their own life. However, it becomes sobering when we realize this is also a direct demand to all who call themselves disciples of Christ.
There was a time King David grew weary of his struggles. He was so tired in his soul, so embattled and beset by troubles, all he wanted was to escape to a place of rest and comfort. In Psalm 55:4-8 we read, “My heart is sore pained within me: and the terrors of death are fallen upon me… And I said, Oh that I had wings like a dove! For then would I fly away, and be at rest… I would hasten my escape from the windy storm and tempest.” There is a valuable lesson to be learned when we substitute our responsibility to obey God with an easier, more relaxing, and pleasurable way. If you read about crabs, they are creatures that live in a rough, dangerous environment among jagged rocks. Crabs are constantly pummeled by the waves and attacked on every side by creatures from deeper waters. Their lives are a continual battle to protect themselves, but over time, they develop an endurance, a strong shell, and powerful instincts for survival. However, some give up the struggle and search for a more complacent way to live by taking up residence in the abandoned shells of other ocean dwellers. These crabs are known as hermit crabs. They escape the hard work to relax in comfort.
However, when the crabs become inactive and stop fighting the good fight, atrophy sets in, and their bodies deteriorate. Even their organs wither due to lack of use, and eventually they lose all power of motion, as well as the ability to defend themselves from their enemies. As their claws fall off, they are left with a powerless existence. Likewise, going through the motions of a nominal and mediocre religious existence is not what God wants. When the Christians surrenders to the temptation to live in carnality, they no longer care about being a living sacrifice. Yes, the battle is hard, and it’s much easier to hide in the shell of religion than to actually do what God is demanding. Read Matthew 24:13-15.
Ephesians chapter six talks about the seven types of armor that Christians have been commanded to wear in this life, as God has called us to be fearless warriors in the battle against evil. We have the helmet, breastplate, shield, sword, boots, the belt, and the most important weapon – prayer. When a soldier engages the adversary, they are protected from the front, but there is no mention of protection from the back. The call to war is to stand firm against the enemy, as this allows faith and power in God’s name to boldly confront the darkness face to face. The saint must not turn and run away in fear, as this exposes their back, and they become a vulnerable target to be easily brought down with deadly arrows and spears. It would be better to remain in prayer and continue developing wisdom, discernment, and faith than to participate in spiritual warfare unprepared. Remember the true account in Mathew 17:19-21. Awaken, and take your place on the front lines today! The devil tries to persuade us to take it easy, but remember, his mission is to steal, kill, and destroy. As a liar and deceiver, he appears to be friendly and tries to persuade us with compromises, but is holding a dagger behind his back.

The devastating effects of deception
For the next couple of weeks I want to talk about the secret chambers of our conscience that contains our thoughts, emotions, attitudes, convictions, and basically who we really are. Some will say they wear their feelings on their sleeves and how transparent they are to everyone. I admire these individuals as they seem to have a personality that is open, humble, and honest with nothing to hide. However, just because a person allows themselves to be fearless and honest about what they think, does not mean they have a pure heart, filled with the Holy Spirit, or they are walking in the awareness of God’s presence. Many people are bold and aggressive about speaking their mind, but are just arrogant.
I believe the Lord has always tried to emphasize within the Christian life, that it’s not just about how we act when others are watching, it’s about who we love and serve on the inside. The Pharisees are an example of how humans can be very good actors that can either intentionally pretend to love God, or they can be deceived with a lack of understanding. Jesus confronted and exposed them saying they did not even know the Lord. In John 8:19, we read a conversation Christ had with these religious leaders. “The Pharisees asked him, where is your father? Jesus replied, you don’t know me or my Father. If you knew me, you would also know my Father.” So who were they serving and worshiping?
In the same chapter Jesus continues the dialogue, “You are from your father, the devil, and you desire to do what your father wants you to do. He has never been truthful. He doesn’t know what the truth is.” One of the most dangerous truth’s within Christianity is that many individuals are avoiding the truth. Simply put, they would rather serve the devil and their flesh than God. Truth must not be limited to head knowledge but must become a revelation in order for God’s word to change us. James 2:19 says “you believe there is one God and you are correct, but the devils also believe and tremble.” So even the devils have knowledge of the truth, but they have no faith or good works because they do not love or serve God. In John 8:47 Christ declares, “The person who belongs to God understands what God says. You don’t understand because you do not belong to God.”
I want to touch on a phenomenon called the Mandela Effect, and it describes how people can believe and or remember certain things, but in reality they are not true. The term originated in 2009 by Fiona Broome, after she discovered that she, along with a multitude of others, believed that Nelson Mandela had died in the 1980s (when he actually died in 2013). She continued her study, asking questions like does it say Jiffy on peanut butter containers, does Curious George have a tail, Did the original Mickey Mouse wear suspenders, was Alexander Hamilton a president, and did Uncle Pennybags in monopoly wear a monocle? She was astounded how the eye and brain can accept something we are sure of, and it’s difficult to admit we had it wrong. Our memory contains the psychological processes of acquiring, storing, retaining, and later retrieving information, but if information is not properly encoded in the filing cabinets of our conscience, this can cause devastating problems.
One of the Biblical examples of this Mandela Effect is the verse in Isaiah that many people believe says the lion will lie down with the lamb. It does not say this. The actual verse in Isaiah 11:6 says wolf. It’s staggering how many people refuse to accept this, even going as far as saying that Satan has somehow changed it. After reading several articles about this subject, the Lord revealed how we can believe a distorted reality that is not true. For example, if we harbor secret hatred and resentment in our heart for someone, we are deceived to believe that God understands our feelings, and will allow us to embrace enmity because He understands our pain. However, the truth is that in refusing to see ourselves the way God see’s us, we have created our own image of Him as being lenient and sympathetic. The truth is that we are a murderer and will never enter into heaven. I John 2:9, 3:15, 4:20, and Matthew 6:14-15. God will not compromise or make exceptions or deals. His grace does not excuse our rebellious assumptions.

Washing the stains, and ironing the wrinkles
Humans do not enjoy being told that God will judge of every person and one day we will meet Him face to face and give an account of our lives. This is not an idea created by Bible teachers to scare people, it’s a truth that is relayed from what God has promised in His word. There are many strange opinions about who God is, what He wants, and our responsibilities as His followers, but the bottom line to lenient interpretations can be explained. Humans are crafty creatures who are always looking to receive something for nothing. Our ability and desire to live in denial intentionally prevents us from listening and obeying God’s will. It’s difficult enough to live in this world without being deceived, but what about when we adopt deception as an excuse to avoid conviction? Changing and transforming are not exciting words to our flesh.
The Bible describes two roads to eternity; one is massive and is the way of disobedience, sin, and destruction, while the other is extremely narrow and associated with sacrifice, holiness, and a relationship with God. It’s true the Lord is compassionate, but He also knows the minds and hearts of every person. He cannot and will not compromise, make special deals or concessions. He is merciful, but He is also the only perfect righteous judge who will always stay true to His word. Deuteronomy 10:17: states, “For the Lord your God is the God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, mighty, and awesome God, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes.”
It’s not a secret that it’s easier to teach what is comfortable, than to talk about secret sin. Christians will clap and shout when someone is talking about blessings and heaven, but will become fidgety when the subject turns to the dangers of willful sin. I’m sure that many of you are sensing the end is near and there are things that we need to do before Jesus returns or we pass away. Instead of wondering about signs and prophecies that must be fulfilled, what about focusing on what we need to do within our mind and conscience. This is the hour to look in the mirror and examine the deepest part of our being. We can no longer just brush our dirt under the carpet and expect to get away with hidden rotten attitudes such as unforgiveness, prejudice, perversion, resentment, carnal character traits, a lack of interest for prayer, study, and worship, and the absence of love and concern for the lost. The bride of Christ will “not” have these stains on their wedding gowns. Read Ephesians 5:27.
A while back I had an interesting talk with an older gentleman, and had attended church since he was a child. He explained that his parents were cold, self-centered, and uncaring, and this had made him the same way. He boldly declared he was what he was and no one could change him. The conversation was pleasant as long as I kept feeling sorry for him, as he kept repeating that if anyone did not like it, he could care less. I asked, does this include God, because He is listening? He responded that God understands. I came back with yes, I’m afraid He does. His life had been filled with a quiet rebellion and resentment that was carefully disguised as someone unable to change. I knew that mindlessly agreeing would encourage him to justify his deception, so I prayed and shared God’s truth about how being born again transforms us into a new creation that can overcome who we were. We choose how much of God we want and how much we desire to be like Him. Of course this made him very upset and angry. When God confronts us, are we defensive like this?
To change is very hard, but it’s my hope and prayer that all of us including myself would not become defensive about sanctification, but would receive God’s gracious conviction and make sure our hearts are pure. It’s with humility and reverential fear that I write these words. He is saying to repent of all hidden wickedness, carnality, dark attitudes, and rebellion – denial is intentional disobedience. “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a person sows, that shall he also reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that sows to God’s Spirit shall of His Spirit reap life everlasting” Galatians 6:7-8.

The world will know us by our love
Each day we are seeing more division within our culture. There is only two sides, hate and love, and the separation is growing larger. Sadly, for those on the dark side, violence is becoming more acceptable. It’s obvious that insisting is not enough for those who now endorse terrorism. Today’s violence has a specific reason: it’s all about politics and religion, just like it’s been since time began. Destruction, death, and even wars have been fought simply because one side disagreed with what the other side believed. From attempts to murder the president to others being assassinated, one side hates the message and wants to silence the messenger. As these two sides become more recognizable, one side has a conscience and the other does not.
It’s disturbing to see millions of people including even people we know, who are pleased with violence. How in the world could anyone in their right mind, especially someone who considers themselves a Christian, rejoice over people being killed, just because their worldviews are different? This is evidence that many are allowing hatred to control their minds, and this resentment has allowed a strong delusion to distort and blind their conscience. Political, religious, and social views are based on whether or not a person cares about what God demands. We know that millions of individuals have been murdered throughout the Old and New Testaments, because of their convictions. The number is too vast to know exactly how many have been silenced for their opinions, but only one side grieves because they know this is what Satan wants.
The OpenDoors World Watch for 2024 reports that each day on average, more than 13 Christians are killed for their faith in Christ. This means that every two hours, a believer is murdered. From October 2023 to September 2024, nearly 300,000 Christians were forced to leave their homes, go into hiding, or flee their country of origin. Global persecution is real, and consistent, and yet we seldom think about how this brutality and suffering could one day be a reality for us. According to a recent survey by the American Psychological Association, nearly 75 percent of adults in the United States are stressed by mass shootings, and a third say this fear causes them to hesitate going to certain places and events. Arthur C. Evans Jr., PhD, and APA’s chief executive officer, says, “It’s clear that mass shootings are taking a toll on our mental health, and we don’t have to experience these events directly for them to have a negative impact on us.”
Many people try to avoid thinking about how evil and persecution are increasing, but Christians are told to study the Bible to guide their faith as they obey His voice. Learning God’s will allows us to understand what is coming and how to develop confidence to speak boldly, and teach those who want to listen. Sadly, many who call themselves a follower of Jesus would rather hide in the closet. II Timothy chapter 3:1-5 is one of many passages that reveals the future and how we are to stand against sin. “This know also, that in the last days perilous times will come. For people will be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, evil, unnatural perversion, back stabbers, false accusers, rebellious, fierce, haters of those who are good, traitors, conceited, highminded, lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God, and having a form of religion, but denying God’s power. Do not associate with these types of people.” Now is the hour to prepare and put on His armor, as verse 12 promises, “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.”
The end of the chapter encourages us to embrace what we have learned as His truth makes us wise unto salvation. As Christians, we are children of the light, and though we make mistakes and occasionally might fall into a lukewarm and discouraged state, we are saved by the grace of God! We are opposite from the dark side. We constantly pray and battle our flesh and the demonic attacks, so that we can live holy and pleasing unto the Lord. We will not hate the other side, we do not want to kill them, or destroy anything or anyone. We pray that we can live in His freedom and His peace. The world will know we are Christians because of our compassion, intercession, forgiveness, wisdom, discernment, faith, hope, and love. Please read II Corinthians chapter 4.

My friends, let’s choose joy today!
I’m honored to have the opportunity to share my heart each week. The messages lately have given us some things to think about, as God’s word brings us into a reverential fear and awareness of His presence. Many different types of people read faith columns, including some who are not openly religious, but are curious spectators. I respect your caution and where you are in your journey, and hope you will consider the Bible passages. For those who confess Christ as their Lord, our walks are at different levels of passion as the spiritual fires burn at various degrees within us. Some of you watch the news and browse the internet to see what’s happening in the world, while others have decided that listening to the tsunami of opinions, speculations, and conspiracy theories is taking a toll on their blood pressure and are determined to step away to keep their minds and their conscience as clear and clean as possible. Which, by the way, I sincerely respect you. Whatever the case, we realize that wherever we are, absorbing negative knowledge weighs heavily on our emotions and well-being.
Yes, truth seekers are relentless because they want to know what’s going on, and that’s good, right? They do not want to be deceived, and I can perfectly relate to this way of thinking. However, we seldom consider that much of what we hear is not accurate. Misinformation has become like a plague, and among the many reasons people spew rumors, we can agree that careless gossip comes from a lack of concern and the absence of integrity. The root of slander includes being offended, which is directly associated with falling into a snare trap of hatred and misery. People are paid for their videos, as the general goal is to gain popularity and hopefully go viral. But politics is like the old cycle of he says, she says. We do not positively know what they are saying is true, and we also do not know if it is, or at least a portion of it. So what’s the answer? Ephesians 4:29-32 is a great place to start.
I know some of you are thinking that we should be like a watchman on the walls, sounding the alarm, and blowing the trumpet to warn the people of danger. I understand, and considered myself as God’s messenger, but here is the key: Standing for truth is one thing, but spreading things that might be tainted with deception is another. Besides, if we spend more time dwelling on how evil the world is, we are becoming lopsided in our responsibility to allow God’s light to shine within us. We are filled with light because Christ is greater than sin, but we decide how much of His light is released. He is not focused or depressed about rampant wickedness, and neither should we. The inspiration here is that God knows all about it, and one day soon, He will create new heavens and a new earth. It’s easy to be consumed with discouragement, but it takes faith to climb out of this snare trap and stand firmly in what God has promised. Pause a moment to read Philippians 4:8; it’s a step to renewing the mind and living in peace.
Our point this week is that we all need a large daily dose of hope. The more darkness we listen to and absorb, the more unsteady and powerless we become. In Nehemiah chapter eight, Ezra the priest spoke refreshing words of the Lord to the people, and as they were weeping, he encouraged them to enjoy God’s goodness and reminded them that the joy of the Lord was their strength. The enemy of our souls has a simple but devastating scheme to distract God’s people from His truth, which makes them physically, mentally, and spiritually free. This freedom is a divine spiritual contentment that passes natural understanding. Psalm 62:5-6, “Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him. Truly, he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.” So, let us “choose” joy today! Joy is a fruit of the Spirit, the nature and character of a spirit-filled life, and the heart of our personal relationship with Jesus. When we are worried, upset, angry, and disheartened, we drift into depression and hopelessness. Can you see Satan’s strategy? How can we represent God when we are filled with doubt, fear, and confusion? Allow Psalm 42:11 and Romans 15:4-6 to fill your heart with confidence and hope. Freedom of speech is a God given right
For the last few weeks we’ve been talking about the end times and what the Bible says about the future. We’ve touched on the prophecies of the rapture, the coming tribulation, the AntiChrist, and the second coming of Jesus. There are many interpretations of eschatology, which should stir us to study diligently about this important subject. One thing we can agree on is that Satan is turning up the heat with more lies, violence, and aggressive hatred. The Bible warns that compassion and basic human decency will dissolve from the conscience of those who choose to live without Christ. We mentioned how the Bible declares that severe persecution against Christians will increase as the masses continue to be confused about right and wrong, and lose their discernment of good and evil. We can see this today as those who boldly speak against the delirium and darkness of sin are targeted as deranged extremists.
On the subject of being attacked, I’m shaken and angry about the young political activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated last week. It does not matter if you agreed with anything he said or not, every person in this country has the legal right to express their thoughts and convictions without the fear of being murdered. He was challenging anyone to discuss and debate the issues that are dividing our nation, and wanted to hear what people believe, and challenged them to prove their ideas. Freedom of speech is the heart of our democracy, as millions of brave soldiers in the last 250 years sacrificed their lives so that we can enjoy this God given right. Fear is the opposite of faith, and even though we are exterminated for publicly voicing our opinions, we will not be silenced.
Some are crying out to remove all guns from every person, but no gun law would have saved this man. We realize that guns, knives, crossbows, clubs, spears, or swords, by themselves do not cause destruction, it’s the intentions of humans who use them as weapons to kill. Sadly, school shootings are becoming more common, but the real problem is spiritual blindness, and mental illness. It’s heartbreaking. Why would any human being want to murder a child? Because they are suffering from psychosis and or possessed with evil. In our talks lately about the rise in demonic activity and fascination for horror, and death, we know that Satan is desensitizing the culture by glamorizing hatred and destruction as entertainment. As more individuals become obsessed with lies and destructive influences, we will only see a rise in horrendous acts of violence.
We develop and exercise our views through our free will – without murdering those we oppose. As we look back through world history, when someone disagreed with the messenger, they often killed them. Remember this happened to Jesus, as His brutal execution had everything to do with His convicting words. Cowards are afraid to calmly discuss issues because of their own lack of intelligence, and will occasionally resort to the devious acts of silencing those they cannot debate. It’s the easy way to eliminate an individual who threatens to expose them by challenging their weak opinions with common sense. Satan hates God’s gift of enlightenment, holy wisdom, and understanding, because he knows it is divine truth in love that can set the captives free. The strategy of the dark kingdom is to deceive the masses and turn the world into a state of chaos and falsehood for the purpose of stealing souls.
We are outraged and realize this is war. May we demonstrate our trust in God, and accomplish the mission that Christ has called us to do. The sleeping giant is awakening, and we pray God’s warriors will be inspired to rise and stand against evil. If we decide to give a speech from our local courthouse lawn tomorrow, we are literally at risk of being killed. The enemy wants God’s children to hide and live in fear of persecution…what are you going to do? Terrorism is not just about the past, it’s a present danger we face now, and without the faith to stand today, how will we stand when the AntiChrist comes? We grieve as we remember those who were murdered in the Twin Tower attacks, and their families who experienced unimaginable loss. We pray for the Kirk family, and ask our Father to give them peace, comfort, and strength. I encourage you to receive these uplifting passages. Ephesians 6:19-20, Proverbs 28:1, II Timothy 1:7, Ephesians 3:12, Joshua 1:9, Deuteronomy 31:6.

Warning the world of what is coming
The rapture is one of the most influential beliefs within Christianity. Many have accepted the idea that before the tribulation begins, they will suddenly disappear from this world, leaving only their clothes and shoes on the floor. If they are driving a car or operating any type of vehicle, it will just crash or come to a stop. Many believe this event could happen at any moment, and I’ve spoken to some who hope it’s today. Yes, we all want to go to heaven, but what about not being concerned about accomplishing God’s work, our calling, finishing the mission, or wanting to reach more lost souls with the gospel before it’s too late?
I also realize that it’s a much happier thought to believe that all current Christians from around the world will not have to face the tribulation or persecution from the Anti-Christ. No pain, suffering, torture, or death. No having to stand for their faith in Jesus with a sword at their necks. No wonder it’s become one of the most popular doctrines that inspires shouting and dancing. It’s like being stranded on a desert island, and you look out and see a ship coming to save you. A miracle! Except there’s a huge difference. Even if we walk through the worst suffering we can imagine, Christ is all we need, and His love will always surround us.
Let’s read the words of Jesus in Mark chapter 8:34-35, “And when He had called the people unto Him with his disciples also, He said unto them, Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for My sake and the gospel’s, the same shall save it.” Can we relate to this passage today? I use this statement often, and sometimes refer to sacrificing our will to God’s will. But here, Jesus is talking about our physical body. A few verses before this, He was explaining that He would be rejected, and would suffer and endure many things that would eventually lead to His death on the cross. I’ve heard people say that Christ came to suffer and die so that we would not have to, but the history of martyrdom begs to differ. He saved us from eternal death, but does not always protect us from persecution.
We continue to verses 36 though 38, “For what shall it profit a person, if they will gain the whole world, and lose their own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever therefore is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also will the Son of man be ashamed, when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” “Blow the trumpet in Zion” is a biblical command from Joel 2:1 that calls for sounding an alarm to warn of the coming Day of the Lord.” If there was ever a time in this modern age to warn others of a coming tribulation and God’s judgment, it is now.
I hope you have been looking at some the scriptures that’s been shared over the last 4 weeks. There is so much to consider for the one who is compelled to study the end times. I’ve let down my guard and shared a few thoughts about the future. I’ve stated that neither Jesus, the disciples, Paul, or any writer of the New Testament believed in or taught a pre or mid tribulation rapture. I rarely talk about eschatology because of the tremendous controversy. I’ve been timid, and I’m sure many pastors feel the same way. It’s complicated, divisive, speculative, sobering, but should cause every saint to fall on their faces in reverential fear, which is exactly where we should be. Seminary’s teach to be open minded to allegory’s, and advise pastor’s to be cautious with end-time prophecy’s. Many pastors just decide to avoid the subject as the end-times are not practical for everyday problems.
Each of us have already made the decision whom we will serve. We do not have to wait until we are forced to take the mark. Our minds and hearts are already established. By laying aside our self-centered striving, we can experience genuine joy, fulfillment, and a deeper, God-centered existence. Our commitment to Him is a holy vow that ultimately leads to the assurance of eternal life and a deeper relationship with God through the Holy Spirit.

What does it mean to endure till the end
It would be wise to understand that Satan knows what he is planning, and since he hates all true Christians, lulling his enemy to sleep has always been an effective tactic of war. We might not understand all the specific lies and strategies designed to confuse our minds, but John 10:10 clearly explains his basic agenda. We are reminded in Matthew 24:24, “For there shall arise false Christs and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch that, if it were possible, the very elect would be deceived.” This is why Jesus pleads with us to abide in His presence and develop our faith and discernment now, seeing that there is coming a time when standing for God will cost us our lives. One of the devil’s most dangerous schemes is to hypnotize believers into accepting that there is nothing to worry about, so is the secret rescue of Christians from the tribulation, causing a false security that leads to an attitude of lukewarmness.
We seldom hear much from those who embrace the escape doctrine about the long history of torture, suffering, and martyrdom, because of how upsetting it is. I agree, nothing is more sobering than reading Foxe’s book of martyrs. Of course, I would rather avoid suffering, but I want to know God’s truth instead of popular interpretations. How does taking away our opportunity to prove our dedication and love for God compare with the sacrifices that have been made over the last 2000 years? Why are we going to be removed from persecution, and why can’t God protect His elect from His wrath? Matthew chapter 24 and 25 is one fascinating sermon, and should not be chopped into separate pieces. In verse 15, Jesus talks about seeing the abomination of desolation, which is the beginning of the great tribulation. Who is He warning if Christians are not here? In verse 27 He says, as the lightning comes out of the east and shines to the west, this is the way His only return will be.
Verse 29, after the tribulation, the powers of heaven will be shaken, and “everyone will see” Christ coming in the clouds. His angels will blow trumpets and gather His elect from all over the world. But, where is the quiet, invisible, catching away of the saints in these passages? Verse 36, “But of that “day” and hour no man knows, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.” We have been told this “day” is a catching away before the second coming, however, as we read on, Jesus describes how the times will grow very wicked and compares this day to the times of Noah when all the people were destroyed except those on the Ark. Noah and his family were not removed from the earth, but obeyed in faith under the shadow of His presence. Human nature always wants something for nothing, and the idea of an easy Christian life of no pain or warfare and plenty of blessings is always well received.
Jesus continues about two being in the field, one will be taken and the other will be left and so on, but again, we need to remember these two chapters are one continuous conversation. As we keep reading into chapter 25, we see that it’s a prophecy of His coming judgment as the Son of man, not a pre or mid tribulation rescue. Chapter 25:31-34 declares when the Son of man comes in His “glory” He will judge and separate the sheep from the goats, which is never mentioned in the modern rapture theory. When the two messengers in white told the men of Galilee in Acts 1:11, “This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven,” they were referring to the Second Coming of Christ to earth, to set up His Millennial Kingdom. Jesus, who came the first time as a baby in humility, will return in power and great glory. Christ, whom His disciples watched return into heaven, will return to earth again with His church in the same way, in the clouds, accompanied by a host of angels. This is describing His “Day of the Lord” return when He will defeat Satan and destroy the armies at Armageddon. This Second (and only) coming happens at the “end” of the seven-year Tribulation, but before His 1000-year reign on earth.

The rapture question is not if, but when?
When discussing the rapture happening before the second coming of Christ, I and II Thessalonians are familiar letters that find their way into the conversation. The word “rapture” itself is not in the English Bible, however, it comes from the Latin Vulgate’s translation of the Greek verb “harpazô” found in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, and commonly taught as a time when God will secretly rescues His people from the great tribulation. II Thessalonians chapter 2 begins with an encouragement to not be upset that the day of the Lord is at hand, however, in this event, every eye will see Him and know that He is God.
When these books were written, the new followers of Jesus were expecting Him to return in His divine authority to conquer Rome, and establish His kingdom forever. They accepted the Day of the Lord was when the trumpet would sound, and Christ would appear on a white horse with the armies of heaven following Him to establish His kingdom. But we notice that Paul does not mention a rescue before this event. If the writer believed Christians would be removed from the earth years before the Day of the Lord, surely this event would have been mentioned.
Within the entire books of I and II Thessalonians, where is a pre or mid tribulation rapture? The context of both books is generally about believers living in a way that is pleasing to God and making sure they are ready for His glorious coming. This is not to say there is no such thing as the saints being transported up to meet Him, but only the one coming is mentioned. I Thessalonians 4:16-18 is a clear explanation of when all saints living and dead will be caught up. “For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, the living will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will forever be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” Unlike when Jesus was born, his return will be a universally witnessed occurrence establishing divine authority and judgment. “For as the lightning comes out of the east and shines to the west: so shall also the coming of the Son of man be” Matthew 24:27.
In I Thessalonians chapter 5, Paul continues the narrative about the end times, and reminds us how the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. This is an analogy describing that we must be constantly focused on Jesus, to be sober, and not distracted, as difficult times are coming for all true Christians. This includes praying without ceasing, wearing the whole armor of God. Matthew chapter chapter 24 also reminds us to warn everyone about intense persecution. The writer mentions in verse 12 about how sin will increase and the love of many will wax cold. For many the enthusiasm of walking with God will fade, and be replaced with lukewarm religious attitudes and carnality. We can definitely see it now. Verse 14 says when the gospel is preached in all the nations, the end will come. Is this not happening today? Verse 15 begins the description of the AntiChrist, and continues warning the saints to prepare for the great tribulation.
Verse 29 says that immediately after the tribulation, the sun and moon will become dark, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heaven will be shaken. Then all the earth will see the Son of man coming in the clouds with infinite authority and glory. Verse 31, “And God shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” The next verse Jesus talks about how we know summer is near when a fig tree develops leaves, and in the same way when we see the specific signs, we can discern the end is near. I Corinthians chapter 15, and verses 51-52, is listed as another example of a secret rapture, but again within the context of the chapter this is talking about the second coming or Day of the Lord. The is question not about the reality of a ressurection and a catching away of saints, but when on the timetable it will happen.

Is the AntiChrist a literal person?
Last week, we began a conversation about our current position in the biblical prophetic timeline. We touched on the subject of the Anti-Christ and the Rapture, and this week I want to delve into a little more detail. As you know, there are many books on this subject, and they all have their own interpretations, which makes it difficult to have a clear understanding. One of the first things an individual needs to decide is whether they believe the Bible is literal when it comes to eschatology, or based on symbolic types and shadows, and analogies. Many scholars who have spent their lives researching this subject are convinced the Old and New Testament prophecies, and of course, the descriptions in the book of Revelation and Daniel are literal and will happen as described. Another point to keep in mind is at the same time the book of Revelation was written, the writer was aware that great persecution was being waged against all Christians by this evil dictator. He was blaming them for the devastating fire in Rome, and some have mentioned that maybe this is who the writer was describing. Others say Nero was driven by the spirit of antiChrist, but was not “The” Antichrist. I John 2:18 explains that Satan has used human leaders throughout the ages to accomplish his evil plans, but there will be one man at the end of time who will lead the armies of the earth against the King of glory and will be crushed by God’s overwhelming power and authority.
So, if we agree that the AntiChrist is a real human who is possessed by Satan, and this son of perdition has not yet been revealed, we are accepting the futuristic view. Whether or not the rapture occurs before the mark is enforced, the consistent biblical message is: God’s people must refuse it, even if it costs them everything. In chapter 13 of Revelation, we read where the dragon (which is Satan), gives power to the beast (thought to be the Antichrist), and that he makes war with the saints. Is this speaking about those who are saved after the rapture? It’s very interesting to note in verse 8 that every lost person will worship him. It goes on to say there will be a second beast that is thought to be a person called the False Prophet. He gives power to the image of the beast, whose number is 666, performs amazing miracles, and requires all inhabitants of the earth to take an identifying mark of the beast that allows them to buy and sell. Without the mark, Christians will need faith and depend on God, much like Elijah at the brook to provide for their needs. The beast also establishes a global Marshall law that demands all who refuse to worship the beast to be killed. We notice in Revelation chapter 7 where John has a vision of an incredible multitude standing before the throne wearing white robes. He is told by an elder that these are the ones from the great tribulation who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. If the catching away of the saints happens sometime within the tribulation, could this be referring to you and I?
These demonic entities will have powerful personalities and incredible supernatural powers, and assume that technology will be included within their strategy to take over the world. Since one of Satan’s titles is prince and power of the air, I do not believe it would be a conspiracy theory to believe he will use the airwaves to help his cause. I’m convinced he’s using it now. Where do you believe artificial intelligence is headed? Since he is waging war against God and anyone who follows Him, do you think he is not going to use any type of brainwashing weapons he can develop? Our world is filled with all types of signals being delivered through airwaves, and to what extent can subliminal messaging be used? As the deceiver and father of all lies, we would be naive to think he is not developing technology as a weapon to control our minds. John 10:10 states that he has come to steal, kill, and destroy, and by manipulating, persuading, distracting, confusing, and influencing the masses through our phones, television, and internet, which are all controlled by airwaves, how can we be sure our conscience is not being infected and tampered with now?

Thoughts about the coming tribulation
I rarely discuss end-time events, but I’ve been receiving emails with questions pertaining to the church being removed from the earth, the second coming of Jesus, and the antiChrist. The reason is simple why I avoid these topics, and it has to do with being unsure of my interpretations of them. I’m sure you are aware there are many opinions about eschatology with most Bible teachers and scholars being convinced they are correct. But, if all Bible passages were crystal clear, there would only be one Christian church and every follower of God would be in agreement without any strife or divisions. The purpose of this column is not a place to be controversial over religious doctrines or stir up anger over political positions, but to present inspirational and encouraging messages to help us understand what God wants from us and what our responsibilities are to Him. On the other hand, we are not to be afraid to stand for truth due to fear of public criticism. Pastors face this every Sunday. Therefore, with so many important questions about our future, I’m curious like most of you about what is going to happen and hoping I will be able to discern the signs. Just let me say my personal views are not set in dogmatic concrete, but rather are possible scenarios and considerations.
I want to focus this week and next week about the antiChrist, but before we begin, I realize the rapture is a subject where many Christians believe they will disappear any moment which is considered a “pre-tribulation” doctrinal position. Others claim the remnant believers will be taken up at the mid-point of the seven year period (1260 days), while still yet some are convinced the saints will remain on the earth throughout the tribulation and be removed when the trumpet sounds and Christ appears in the sky. At this time the dead are resurrected as Christ crushes the armies at Armageddon. Is the rapture a secret event, or does the entire world see Him and know what is happening? Is the day of the Lord a third return? I’m sure you have your own views and can use scriptures to prove your points. On a side note, we know the word rapture is not found in the Bible, and that John Nelson Darby made the word popular in the 1830s. I find II Thessalonians chapter 2 interesting, as it has some interesting clues. Throughout history and even now millions of saints have been martyred for their faith including the original apostles and were not removed from persecution.
Whenever the Lord returns, knowing He is coming back for us is our greatest hope. I believe the message He is speaking to all of His children today is to be ready. Do not rest on the bed of comfort thinking that we will not have to suffer for our faith. Of course, this is a happy thought, but the love of many waxing cold and the strong delusion coming, the hatred for Christians will increase. Matthew chapters 24 and 25 and the book of Revelation, gives us critical information about us facing stronger resistance. Several Old and New Testament passages are tied together to present a more complete understanding, but even with these puzzle pieces it’s still difficult to establish timelines. One component in the mix includes a coming world leader that will sweep the masses off their feet as he becomes the most powerful and influential person on the planet. In Revelation chapter 13, we read how this this evil person who is possessed with Satan along with his partner the false prophet will perform such amazing miracles they will capture the minds and hearts of everyone who is not a member of God’s elect.
Verse 8 says, “All who dwell on the earth will worship the beast, whose names have not been written in the Lamb’s book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the foundation of the world.” This statement causes me to wonder how any human could convince the entire world that he can be trusted? We can’t even find two people who agree on everything. In closing, if you have ever doubted your salvation, this is the hour to make sure you are born again. What if the rapture does not happen before the antiChrist takes control? If you are not saved, you will believe the mark of the beast is a good thing. Philippians 2:12 reminds us to seek out our own salvation with fear and trembling.

Do we really desire spiritual maturity?
As a messenger who presents the word of God, it’s an honor to serve. My goal in communicating is to ask the Lord what He wants me to say and to use me to do His will. For those of you who are dedicated Christians that love Jesus and follow Him, I’m sure you also pray for this every day. I believe that we should be a lighthouse filled with God’s love and all the fruits of His Spirit, however, this does not mean we should be afraid or intimidated to speak the truth no matter how uncomfortable or unpopular. We all enjoy inspiring stories and encouraging messages, but there is more to spiritual maturity than just selecting content that makes us feels good. There needs to be an understanding that seeking truth includes a balance of faith to accept all of God’s demands simply because we love Him.
In the realm of Biblical instruction, we have the charismatic fiery style that boldly addresses the consequences of disobeying God, while the more modern methods calmly teach Bible stories that reflect situations within our everyday lives. With listening to all types of expository, textual, and topical preaching through the years, I believe we need all of it. To me, what’s being said is more valuable than how it is delivered. I will agree that a gifted orator is much more interesting to listen to, however it’s what we can glean from the message and apply to our lives that is most important.
A true messenger of God can serve chocolate cake if that is what God has placed on their heart, but they should also not avoid serving broccoli because they fear rejection from those who might be offended. It’s necessary for the follower of Christ to remember that we have a responsibility to relay the message as we have heard it the same as the writers of the Bible recorded what they heard the Holy Spirit speak. If we make known our own thoughts, it will not have the anointing to convict the minds and souls of the listener, but if we are determined to obey God’s voice, His life-changing words will not return void as His perfect intentions will be accomplished. We are reminded that His words are just sounds and scribbles unless we allow them to transform us into His image. William Law is quoted, “Read whatever chapter of scripture you will, and be ever so delighted with it, yet it will leave you as poor, as empty and unchanged as it found you unless it has turned you wholly and solely to the Spirit of God, and brought you into full union with and dependence upon him.”
I’ve noticed over the years that if an individual is not a serious truth seeker, they are not as enthusiastic about learning and generally do not really care about reading or even listening. For example, if a Christian goes to church without a notebook and pen, they are not desperately concerned about remembering what they are about to hear. Since it’s been proven the average person maybe retains maybe five percent of a speech, obviously they are alright with this. When college students attend lectures by their professors, do you think they record and take as many notes as possible? Of course. A major reason we attend church is to learn and develop our spiritual understanding as this is how knowledge and wisdom not only increases our intelligence, but also gives us the maturity and ability to teach others. Second Timothy 2:15 is not an option, “Study to present thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
I conclude that a lack of interest in Biblical instruction reveals a lukewarm attitude toward God and our accountability to know and obey Him. We have no problem staying busy with things we want to do, but could these be intentional distractions in order to live in denial of what we need to be doing? Have we not learned that our flesh avoids the thought of self-examination and repentance, and would much rather live in deception than submit to His conviction? Satan does not care what we do, as long as we continue to live in a self-induced comfortable coma of spiritual slumber. In this late hour, the sobering truth is there is only one objective for the believer, and that is to lay down our agenda and do everything exactly as He says.

Fearless warriors do not hide under the bed
It’s not really a secret about there being such a thing as good and evil. Yes, I know for every statement there is a counter argument, as even a few people deny the earth is round. But, generally speaking, the masses are to some degree aware of the good God, bad devil concept. Within the Christian faith, it’s believed that God is infinite, perfect, represents the light and everything good, and is in total control of all things. On the dark side, Satan is a destructive spiritual entity who works around the clock trying to disrupt God’s plans. This includes unleashing a relentless barrage of damaging attacks and evil influences against the human race. What do you think about this summary? Do you accept this view of what is happening in the spiritual realm?
We see in the Bible how this battle was happening in the Garden of Eden, and it has never stopped. Again, one needs to settle within their conscience whether or not the Bible instructions and accounts are true or not. For those who embrace the Bible as the truth of God’s promises and warnings, there is good news in knowing that Jesus went to the cross and rose from the dead in order to save us from sin and prove that God is the ultimate authority over everything. This gives us Christians peace and security to know that even though the war is intense, we can be victorious over the darkness because light overcomes darkness and greater is the Lord who lives in us than he that is in the world.
For those who are more experienced, knowledgeable, and involved with spiritual warfare, they have learned the closer the Christian walks with God, the more intense the battle. We can see this in the life of Christ as the devil knew who Jesus was and the purpose of His mission. However, when Satan thought he had defeated Jesus and prevented Him from establishing His kingdom, he was deceived. The devil realized he had lost when Christ rose from the dead, and that dying on the cross was actually the intention of God from the beginning. No one took Jesus’ life, He gave it willingly to open the way of redemption through His blood sacrifice. Satan laughed at Jesus on the cross, but trembled in fear when he realized God’s plan of salvation had worked perfectly.
This is why the Christian can boldly declare that trusting God is choosing the winning side. In Matthew chapter 4 we read where Satan and Jesus actually had a conversation. The devil was trying to offer Jesus a deal so that he could keep spreading his negative influences. Jesus stood against Him which allows us to see the importance of understanding the responsibilities of spiritual authority. You see, with God we are a majority no matter how many demons fight against us. I think it’s odd that with so many who claim to be God’s soldier, yet when spiritual warfare is mentioned they become afraid and want to change the subject. The same is true when asked about demonstrating spiritual gifts or casting our demons. Very few have ever personally engaged combat against the enemy. Why is this?
If the average Christian truly believes the dark side is real, but avoids praying against it, something is wrong. Most realize they have not developed their faith or discernment and thus are not confident in this area. Others think that what happens will happen and that God will fight for them. Whatever the excuses people hide behind, the reality of John 10:10 rarely crosses their mind. It seems the enemy of our soul reminds them of a hornets nest to which as long as they do not poke at him, he will leave them alone. Hosea 4:6 mentions that people suffer from the lack of understanding spiritual knowledge and sadly our clever human nature has figured out that pretending to be ignorant is much easier than being accountable. Ephesians 6:12 reminds every Christian why we are commanded to use the armor of God. The helmet, sword, and shield is for fighting on the front lines of intercession, but most followers have stored these in the closet, seeing that it’s more comfortable to read war stories than to enlist. So, when will God’s warriors awaken and confess they have fallen asleep on their watch? When will the followers of Christ turn away from meaningless distractions and respond to the trumpets of war?

All glory to God for this milestone
I wanted to take a moment to say how much I appreciate you, the reader, for taking time each week to read “Living On Purpose.” I’ve written sermons, songs, and books, for over 40 years, but only started this faith column on January 2016. Each of my columns have file numbers, and as several editors have noticed, this week is number 500. It’s hard to believe that 10 years has gone by so quickly. We know that 500 weeks of messages is small compared to many pastors and teachers who have presented thousands of sermons. Sharing my heart with you is very special, and this week I’m celebrating God and grateful to Him for making it possible.
The inspiration to write began in the eighties and nineties in the form of writing Christian music. While in my twenties, I was working in our church as a praise and worship leader. In this particular style church back in the early eighties, they called us song leaders or ministers of music which is fine. I’ve always enjoyed playing and singing, but after a few years of singing what others had written, I began to write my own songs with a passion to express what I wanted to say. I traveled around and played them when doors would open, and I eventually recorded several studio albums and later some compact discs. Occasionally I will offer them as a free gift.
I rarely plan what I’m going to discuss each week, I just go into my office, pray, and begin to communicate what comes to me. There’s a sign in my office that says, “You do not write because you want to say something; you write because you have something to say.” I’m not implying that every word I type is God speaking, but I am mindful about what I relay. I have my own opinions and interpretations like everyone else, but it’s also interesting to note that if we are dedicated truth seekers, it’s not impossible for us to change our views after analyzing a particular subject. I’ve come to the conclusion that none of us really know as much as we think we do. This is proven by the amount of differing ideas and opinions there are about the same Bible passages. It’s said, the more we learn the more we discover we do not know.
In the late nineties I enrolled in a 2-year Bible training school, and from there I applied and was accepted into Christian Bible College and Seminary where I completed 3 degrees there including a doctorate of divinity in Christian Counseling. I then earned a doctorate in Christian Education from from Andersonville Theological Seminary. As time went on, I felt compelled to write a book about worship. With years leading congregations, along with my personal Bible studies, I sensed the Lord was revealing that worship is more than singing songs, it’s developing an awareness of His constant presence. The personal intimacy was something I believed God was more interested in than the public programs. So, in 2015 I released, “A Lifestyle of Worship – Living in The Awareness of God’s Presence.” Two more books followed, Convictions and Considerations – Encouragement for the Soul” and in 2021, Receiving Our Healing – Going to War on Our Knees.” Also in the last 5 years I’ve completed a PhD in Church History and one in Biblical History from Northwestern Theological Seminary.
I also want to express a special thank you to all the editors and publishers that presents the column in your hard copies and websites. I also want to say I sincerely appreciate those of you that send encouraging letters and emails. With the column going to 1100 publications each week, the last I checked, it’s being published in multiple papers within 37 states. This does not include the giant global news agencies that pick it up from newspapers and post it for their subscribers to read – for free of course. Yes, this means my weekly readership is in the millions, but 98 percent of the papers that publish my work do not compensate me. I’m currently a magazine content coordinator for Best Version media, the chaplain for our County Fire District, a singer and actor in our local theatre, we distribute food through our non-profit charity, and I’m honored to help with baptizing and serving communion in our local jail ministry led by Mrs. Barbara Burton. And, of course I’m happy and excited to continue with this column for as long as the Lord wants!

Heroes without capes or superpowers
We hear a lot about heroes these days. Accomplished athletes are admired as idols for throwing around a ball, while actors in blockbuster movies portray individuals who can fly and use their incredible powers to save the universe. However, in the real world, it’s encouraging to know there are humble and hardly noticed genuine heroes all around us. Without a desire to be praised or even recognized, there are selfless good Samaritans who are willing to sacrifice their lives so that others can live, a testament to John 15:13. The following story is an example of these heavenly secret agents.
Irena Sendler was a Polish nurse and social worker who worked in the Warsaw health department during World War II. In a short window of time between 1942 and 1943, she, along with a small band of co-workers, led a courageous effort within the Warsaw ghetto to secretly smuggle at least 2,500 Jewish babies and children away from facing the certainty of the German concentration camps. She and her small team of helpers were members of Zegota, an underground organization established in 1940 by the Polish government for the purpose of rescuing Polish Jews. The team was given permission by the Nazis to enter the ghetto to help segregate the city’s 380,000 Jews, and this was the window of opportunity that helped with the dangerous undercover plan to secretly smuggle babies and young children to safety.
The Zegota used every idea possible to rescue the innocent, which included hiding them in toolboxes and under gurneys, sneaking them into ambulances, taking them through sewer pipes or other underground passageways, wheeling them out in suitcases, and leading them out through an old courtyard which led to the non-Jewish areas. Irena carefully recorded the names of the children on cigarette papers and sealed them in glass bottles, which she buried in a colleague’s flower garden. After the war, the jars were dug up and the lists handed over to Jewish representatives. Attempts were made to reunite the children with their families, but sadly, most of the parents had perished in the Treblinka death camp.
Irena was arrested in October 1943 and taken to Gestapo headquarters where she was interrogated to surrender information about the leaders of Zegota. She endured severe beatings which included her legs and feet being broken. With orders to be executed, (with what many consider to be a miracle from Heaven), a secret deal was made at the last minute between Zegota and her would-be executioner, and she was released. Irena was later found unconscious along the side of the road and had to use crutches for the rest of her life as a result of her injuries.
One of the 2500 names placed in the jars was Michal Glowinski, who became a professor of literature. He said, “I fondly think about her and owe my life to her.” Elzbieta Ficowska was another name who came forward to say how eternally grateful she was for the heroic actions of the Zegota team. In her case, she had been smuggled out of the ghetto inside a large toolbox when she was just five months old.
Unlike the German industrialist Oskar Schindler, who saved more than 1,000 Jews by employing them at his Krakow factory and is widely recognized thanks to an award-winning book and film, Mrs. Sendler’s story remained relatively unknown until a few years ago when it was discovered in America by a group of Kansas school children who wrote a play about it called “Life in a Jar.” Word spread very quickly, and now the world is aware of her and her team saving many defenseless victims of the Nazi ideology. When interviewed, Irena sternly insisted she did nothing special and is quoted as saying, “I was brought up to believe that a person must be rescued when drowning, regardless of religion and nationality. The thought of being considered a hero irritates me greatly as I continue to have pangs within my conscience that I did so little. My emotions are overshadowed by the fact that my faithful co-workers, who also constantly risked their lives, did not live long enough to share their sorrow for those they could not save.” She spent her last years in a Warsaw nursing home and passed away in 2008. “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others” Philippians 2:3-4.

Compromise is the enemy of our faith
The Christian faith believes that God draws people to Himself when they hear the “good news” gospel message about how much He loves the world when He sent His Son to shed His blood on the cross as the only sacrifice that could redeem those who believe. This is why evangelism is important to the follower of Christ, as the idea is that the more the gospel is presented, the more people will be convicted and respond to this gift of salvation. After a person has made their public profession in God, and vows to love and serve Him all the days of their lives, they proceed to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit that symbolizes they have died to sin and are now resurrected into a new creation in Christ. We rise from the grave of hopelessness and are now members of God’s family.
The Bible declares that we willingly surrender our will to do His will as we are saved by His grace through our faith. We respond to His invitation to embrace Him as Lord, King, and Master of all we are and hope to be. So, what happens next? Does this mean the person is now protected from evil and sheltered from any attacks, deceptions, lies, or temptations? I wish, but the truth is the battle has just started. You see, when we were spiritually lost and blind, we did not care about things like personal accountability to God, taking up our cross, or trying to live holy as God is holy. We did not have a guilty conscience when we sinned or a hatred for being disobedient to Him. However, when our spirit was transformed into a child of God and our mind was renewed, our thoughts and behavior changed.
The passage in I Corinthians 6:20 says, “You were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.” We seldom hear this theology anymore, but true followers of Jesus Christ have been purchased and rescued from sin and its consequences through the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. We are called to live a life that honors God, as we are owned and directed by Him. Within the context of this chapter, the sobering message is that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God. Verse 19 prefaces our passage by discussing how the physical body of the believer is the temple of the Holy Spirit, which lives within them as they no longer live however they want, but are completely devoted to love and serve God alone. One of the greatest enemies of the faith is compromise. It is a destroyer of holiness.
Being sanctified means to be separate from the world. Since our identity is now changed, we no longer dwell, or desire to do the things we used to do. Sounds easy, right? Not hardly. I’ve spoken with individuals who claim to be born-again followers of Jesus, but when I mention spiritual warfare, they admit they do not really know much about it. Sin is easily accepted by the religious masses and to shine God’s holy light of strictness and discipline causes lukewarm attitudes to become restless and uncomfortable. So, what is the modern solution? Just talk about how much God wants to bless us and all the good things He has planned for us. Don’t mention blood, sacrifice, dying, discipline, or war, it’s too negative.
We can live in our own imaginations and deny the truth of how the level of spiritual warfare we are encountering reveals how close we are to God. This cuts deep, but if we do not intercede daily and are not seeking a constant awareness of His presence, we are more enthused about the fish and bread than doing God’s will. If we are not accomplishing our mission, demons will not worry about us. It’s when we are tearing down evil strongholds through prayer, and trying to help others escape the lies of the devil, that all hell will come against us. I realize it’s more cozy enjoying the comforts of life, dreaming about heaven, but are we not called to spiritually fight against the darkness? What, too painful and violent? Too dirty, embarrassing, and difficult? Are we afraid that if we give ourselves completely to God, it will turn our lives upside down? Take the time and read I Peter 5:8-9, II Corinthians 10:3-5, and Ephesians 6:12, and you will see the Christian mission is more than attending church.

Focusing on why we are free
Celebrating Independence Day is always a highlight of the summer season. It is truly a time of celebration as we are thankful for the decisions that were made by Congress and the courage and faith these men presented as they declared to the world the United States wanted the freedom to become a sovereign nation. When the initial battles in the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, few colonists desired complete independence from Great Britain, and those who did were considered radical. By the middle of the following year, however, many more colonists had come to favor independence, thanks to growing hostility against Britain and the spread of revolutionary sentiments such as those expressed in the bestselling pamphlet “Common Sense” published by Thomas Paine in early 1776.
On June 7, when the Continental Congress met at the Pennsylvania State House (later Independence Hall), the Virginia delegate Richard Henry Lee introduced a motion calling for the colonies’ independence. Amid heated debate, Congress postponed the vote on Lee’s resolution, but appointed a five-man committee, including Thomas Jefferson of Virginia, John Adams of Massachusetts, Roger Sherman of Connecticut, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania, and Robert R. Livingston of New York, to draft a formal statement justifying the permanent break with Great Britain. On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the now infamous Declaration of Independence (written largely by Jefferson). Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the official day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.
We realize that many people are more caught up in the festivities of cook-outs, and fireworks for the occasion and of course, this year the Federal holiday falls on Friday and is a fun time to enjoy a three-day weekend. I just want to add that while we are appreciating this wonderful blessing from God, it would be good to keep this nation in our prayers. A lot is going on in our country right now and much of it is associated with hatred, rebellion, and disagreement. I do not want to get into all the details, but I’m sure you know what I’m referring to. I realize there has always been differing sides when it comes to politics, and the dividing line of hostility has never been more clear, as we see state and federal judges who are opposing most everything that our new administration is trying to do.
There is also another annual event that is important especially for those who consider themselves to embrace the Christian faith, but there is a good chance you will not hear much about it. This year the United States will celebrate the 70th official anniversary of “In God We Trust” as our National motto established was a law passed by the eighty-fourth congress and approved by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on July 30, 1956. For those who are followers of Christ, we are confident this declaration originates from the Bible with passages such as Psalm chapter 16 and verse 1 that says, “Preserve me, O God: for in Thee do I put my trust.” As Christians we believe when God said that vengeance is His judgment, as we fight evil on our knees in prayer and depend on His power to accomplish His will.
Isaiah chapter 5 uses a prophetic oracle delivered through the metaphor of a vineyard to describe a time when Israel became rebellious. God, the owner of the vineyard (representing Israel), is disappointed because his vineyard produced wild grapes instead of the expected good fruit. This symbolizes the Israelites’ failure to live up to their covenant with God, characterized by injustice, greed, and a disregard for God’s law. The chapter includes a series of “woes,” which are pronouncements of judgment against specific sins, and ultimately foreshadows God’s judgment and the consequences of their actions. One of the sins we notice in verses 20-21 was being confused as to what is right and wrong. “Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter. Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight.” Our freedom is not so we can do whatever we want. We are free to serve and worship God. The world wants no rules or laws, but God’s people are focused on Romans 12:9, “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.”

It’s how we react to what happens
We hear a lot about how God is at war with Satan, how the darkness is fighting against the light, as God’s people are constantly waging an intense battle against the demons and forces of evil. As Christians we are accustomed to hearing that we can not only resist the devil, but in God’s name and power we can be victorious. Let’s not forget our free will decides how we react to adversity which definitely plays an important part of the equation. According to the Bible and within Christian theological belief systems, this is generally true, however, we must remember that nothing happens unless God either approves or disapproves. No matter what the enemy attempts, God is carefully watching every wicked strategy all over the world all at the same time. This means that Satan can launch attacks, but is not in control as to the success of these assaults. We often forget where we would be today if every evil spear and arrow had found it’s mark. We ask God to protect us along with praising Him for all the times He did. Sometimes He stops them and other times He expects us to rebuke and resist the enemies lies.
It’s a common belief within the Christian faith that Jesus Christ personifies all power and authority because He and the Father are as one. This supremacy coincides as part of the atonement sacrifice Christ made at Calvary as His blood was and is the only sacrifice that could forgive sin, provide miracles, and restore our relationship back with God. We rejoice for our eternal salvation and are convinced our redemption is established by His death on the cross and confirmed through His ressurection. Whether a person believes in cessationism or continuation, God is compassionate and sovereign about listening to prayers and intervenes whenever He wants. I believe all Christians through their faith have some type of spiritual gift to share as a way of bringing glory to God. In Luke 11:9-10, the Lord invites us to ask with an unwavering confidence and expectation according to His perfect will. In Mark 9:23 Jesus said, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him that believes” and in10:27 He promised, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.”
If you are like me, you probably find yourself struggling to maintain a vibrant and consistent prayer life. Those who are diligent to staying focused on His agenda will agree that our flesh does not enjoy praising or praying to God or serving Him for that matter. When we think about spiritual warfare many times we have an image of battling Satan with our swords much like the tales of knights in shining armor waging war against fire-breathing dragons, but we seem to forget our strongest enemy is actually our attitude. Our carnal nature is a rebellious force like none other, and until we take control of our renegade mind, we cannot proceed in our quest for spiritual maturity. It’s on the battlefield of the conscience where spiritual wars are won and lost, and is at the heart of our accountability. Romans 6:16 explains it perfectly, “Are you not aware that whoever you serve and obey, you are a love slave to them; whether of sin unto death, or obedience unto God’s righteousness?”
It would seem that spending time with the one who created us, and saved us would be our highest joy. When we think about being in heaven with God, we picture ourselves embracing Him, sitting at His feet listening and telling Him how much we love Him without ever growing weary. However, within this temple of flesh which embraces pleasure and enjoys independence, we often choose to intentionally ignore Him. So, as we pray for wisdom and discernment, we begin to understand that our frustration, sadness, discouragement, and all the problems we blame for stealing our joy is not because the devil is beating us up, but is our lack of being focused on God’s truth. When we drift away from Jesus, our spirit battery runs down, and we become cranky and depressed. All we need to do is to fall on our face, repent, pray and praise the Lord and be restored in our relationship with Him. Yes, we need to do this everyday or maybe every hour, but it’s our reaction. Standing with God is a choice the flesh is always ready to fight against to the death.

Having the compassion of Jesus
Those who have never experienced an addiction can seem unsympathetic and uncaring. Why? There are several reasons, like thinking that self-inflicting destruction does not deserve compassion, or maybe it’s the arrogance of thinking they themselves would never be so blind as to let something like that happen to them. I feel the greater consideration would be, “is becoming captured in the dependency of a chemical more offensive to God than any other type of obsessive attraction or dependence?” Is drug addiction more of a sin than the addiction of overeating, pornography, alcohol, pain meds, anger, or gambling? Many in today’s world have even developed a dependency associated with social media. So, why is it easier to discriminate and have prejudice against certain people than for example, someone who lies or cheats on their taxes? Maybe for some, it’s easier to condemn someone they judge is higher on the list of intentional destructive behaviors.
I recently received a call from a distraught mother that has a daughter who is in every sense of the word an addict. The family lives on the West Coast and she began to tell her painful story of how they were once a happy and blessed family. They went to church, were financially stable and so proud of both of her beautiful daughters. Sadly, the girls started hanging around bad crowds and drifted away. That was eleven years ago. One daughter is recovering, and the other is incarcerated in our local detention center. I made an appointment to see the one who is here in my town. Those who work there know me as a community chaplain and allowed me to meet with her privately in a small office space. We had a productive conversation as she cried more tears in forty-five minutes than some people weep in years. She wants to change and go back to way things used to be. She remembers flirting with the curiosity of getting high which seemed exciting at the time and how she eventually surrendered to the subtle temptations to experience the fleeting pleasures everyone was talking about.
Slowly she became entangled in a spider web which led her deeper into dependency and in a short period of time it had her wrapped tightly in the bondage of darkness and despair. Yes, she made bad choices, but we all have. The reality is that God wants to recover and restore everyone’s life, but He cannot bring healing and balance if we will not let go of the problem. Whatever we are trying to break free from, we must take it one choice, one day, and one prayer at a time. It will not be simple or painless for this young woman (or anyone else) to regain control of their life, nonetheless we have this glorious promise; “But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible” Matthew 19:26.
When discussing the negative attitudes of condemnation, we are reminded of the true account found in John chapter eight where Christ interrupts a public execution involving a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. The religious leaders asked Jesus concerning His thoughts about the Mosaic law with the intention of confusing Him, to which He simply replied, “He who is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” This was amazing, but the story does not stop here. As the execution squad quietly walked away, Jesus told the woman that her accusers no longer condemned her and neither did He, go and sin no more. When we see the animosity, disgust, and contempt toward those who have made horrible choices, the question remains as to why human nature is always ready to throw the first stone?
I recall the old saying about how people who live in glass houses should not throw rocks and this should remind us of God’s mercy toward us. I believe it’s important in these troubling times, to be more forgiving and more concerned about making sure our own heart is right with God. Spending our time focusing and judging others, causes an infection of pessimism, resentment, and even hatred. When we neglect to pray for those who have lost their way, we continue to grow cold and harsh which adds to our own misery. Are we not to love others as ourselves? “All have sinned and come short of the glory” Romans 3:23. Asking God to forgive and wash us clean, fills us with His peace, and reveals our need to drop the stones and face the denial of our own issues.

Salvation is free, but it’s not cheap
The Christian faith believes that God draws people to Himself when they hear the gospel message about how much He loves them. This is why evangelism is important, since the idea is that the more the gospel is presented, the more people will be convicted and respond to Christ. After a person has made their public profession of faith in God, they proceed to be baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, which establishes them in the family of God. With complete water immersion, the believer is enacting the symbolism of Jesus’ death by declaring they have been washed clean and have died to sin. Rising out of the water symbolizes their union with Jesus in His resurrection, emerging from the grave of hopelessness, and being transformed into a new creation in Christ.
As a new child of God, they have invited Him to become the Lord, King, and Master of all they are and hope to be. Their lives are now based on the desire to manifest the character of Christ, instead of making decisions that were once controlled by carnal thinking. This new state of mind continues to be developed by a spiritual process of a renewed consciousness that chooses to stay focused on God and be aware of His presence. The Bible is not just a friendly recommendation or suggestion when it comes to salvation, it’s the word of God that demands that His children live holy as He is holy and to listen and obey His still small voice. This includes not just growing and maturing in their faith to trust Him in every situation, but to earnestly pray for courage and determination to resist temptation, along with a hatred for sin.
Jesus was tempted but never sinned. He was a natural man of flesh, but He was also the divine Son of God. When we become a Christian, we are also tempted to indulge in things that are wrong, but God in His mercy and grace, has made an opportunity for His children to not only resist the dark influences and persuasions but also to repent and receive forgiveness for their trespasses when they sin. An important aspect of iniquity to remember there is a difference between making mistakes and willingly committing intentional sin. We do not hear a lot about trespasses anymore, due to the reality that people (even Christians) do not want to be reminded of their dark habits and secrets. We spend, eat, dream, plan, say, and do whatever we want, but how many times do we stop and ask God if our choices are His will?
The blood that Jesus shed on the cross provides the only sacrifice that can forgive and wash the human heart and soul clean. Those who are now committed to walking on the straight and narrow path of obedience are in covenant with God. The old hymn, “I surrender all” speaks volumes about where we stand with the Lord and how serious we are about taking up our cross and following Him. When Jesus was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane right before He was arrested, He is quoted in Luke 22:42 saying, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine be done.” He surrendered His life for the glory of God, and this is our perfect example to follow.
It is good for the Christian to realize that just because we have been given the gift of eternal life, this does not mean we are free from the accountability of sanctification that God demands. Many are watching everything we do and listening to every word we say. If we assume just because our future is secure, that we can do whatever we want, we are deceived. The concept of redemption is that we should be growing closer to God and becoming more holy, not relaxing and being considered a religious phony. The enemy of our souls whispers his lies, hoping we will let down our guard and place comforts and pleasures above being a living sacrifice, which is our reasonable service. When Christians stand before the Judgement Seat of Christ, the condition of their garments will reveal the motives and intentions of their hearts. Their deeds will be examined to determine their rewards and standing in eternity. Salvation is free, but it is not cheap. The spiritual reality is that it will cost us everything.

God’s endless mercy and compassion for you
God is always waiting and willing to bring us back into right standing with Him. Jesus said in Matthew chapter 18 that He leaves the 99 and finds the lost one and brings them back into the fold. How does He do this? He brings conviction into their conscience, they see where they have strayed away from His truth, and they repent and are sorrowful for their disobedience. “Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be erased, so that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” Acts 3:19. Why does He do it? Because He loves you more than anything in the world.
Today, if you have accepted what Christ accomplished on the cross and received Him as your Lord and Savior, rescuing you from your sins is exactly what He has done for you. For others who have thought about God throughout their lives, but have never really surrendered their will to Him, this moment is also a divine appointment with you. His message? He desires that you trust Him with your mind, heart, and soul. He simply wants to save you and give you eternal life. I John 1:9 promises, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” “Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26.
The gospel is not complicated. It’s basically saying that trusting in the sacrifice of Jesus is the only way we can be transformed into a new creation and live with God forever. This is a quote from Jesus, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” John 14:6. Jesus is the Son of God which came down from heaven, gave His body and shed His blood to offer salvation and redemption to all who will embrace Him. Do you believe today that Jesus is the Son of God and that He lives in your heart as your Master and King? Do you love God with everything you are and everything you will ever be? I Timothy 2:5, “For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” Our part of this covenant relationship is that we freely give ourselves to Him, not for what He can do or give, but we love, obey, and worship Him for who He is.
God has amazing plans for you! If you feel the Holy Spirit is convicting you to ask Jesus Christ into your heart today, or to repent and rededicate your life back to Him, to save you and fill you with His presence, listen to these passages which declare the truth of His mercy and compassion for you. “Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” John 3:3. “And the God of all grace who has called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” I Peter 5:10. “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him” John 3:36. “And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” 1 John 5:11-12.
There is no greater love than God’s love for us, and there is not a more important decision in this world than to accept Christ as our Savior and Lord. Have you considered the consequences of ignoring the gift of salvation? We are reminded that our spirit will live forever in one of two places. Romans 10:9-10 gives us an amazing promise concerning how we can know, love, and serve God and receive His miracle of eternal life. “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Faith is established in the heart and is accompanied by a profession of the mouth. Call upon Him now.

Honoring those who gave their all
Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces, particularly those who died in battle or as a result of wounds sustained in battle making the ultimate sacrifice for their country. You’ll find that some veterans find it dismaying when they are thanked on this day and most realize the person has good intentions but are confused about the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Memorial Day remembers those who died in combat while Veterans Day honors all who have served in our military. We might consider how we can support and safeguard their grieving families and loved ones who are left behind, as well as being thankful for those who allow us to have the freedom we enjoy today.
There was a time when society seemed to be more sensitive and compassionate about casualties of war, but today there are many distractions that cause the mind and conscience to be so busy that people forget what is important, and not consider the untold agony these soldiers went through along with their grieving families. Another example is the neglect to teach young children about who God is. Nevertheless, many still embrace their convictions about life and God and will continue to stand for sacred truth. My grandmother went to bed and cried in agony for weeks after her 20-year-old son (my uncle) was killed on the battlefield in Korea.
The custom of honoring ancestors by cleaning cemeteries was an annual act of remembrance, as well as a chance to clean and decorate family memorials. In early rural America, it was usually performed in summer and was an occasion for family reunions and picnics. Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day, starting with the American Civil War. If we pay attention to how the American flags are raised on Memorial Day, we notice at sunrise, flags are raised to full staff briskly, then lowered to half staff position, where they remain until noon, then raised to the top of the staff until sunset. Traditionally, on Memorial Day, volunteers often place small American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 P.M. Consider visiting a local cemetery to place flags; many organizations are grateful for volunteers.
It’s believed that the tradition of honoring the dead was inspired by the way Southern states decorated the graves of both Confederate and Union soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags. On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan issued an order to designate May 30 as an annual day of remembrance. With the Civil War, America’s need to honor its military dead became prominent as monuments were raised and ceremonies centering on the decoration of soldiers’ graves were held in towns and cities throughout the nation. After World War I, Decoration Day included all fallen soldiers, not just those from the Civil War, and the term “Memorial Day” started being used. By World War II, Memorial Day became the term in more common usage. In 1971, Memorial Day became a national holiday by an act of Congress. Here is one of the countless true stories of bravery that needs to be shared so that everyone can see more clearly why we honor those who willingly sacrificed their lives for their country.
Lance Corporal Miguel Keith was born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 2, 1951. A former teacher said, “Miguel was never one to sit on the sidelines, he always wanted to be involved.” Miguel left High School in January 1969 to join the Marine Corps. He arrived in South Vietnam that November and was assigned as a rifleman with the 1st Combined Action Group, III Marine Amphibious Force. In the early hours of May 8, 1970, Keith was wounded at the start of a surprise assault by Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces on the village where his platoon was camped. Despite his wounds, the eighteen-year-old ran toward the attackers, killing five, and was further injured by the shrapnel from a grenade blast. Bleeding heavily, Keith faced off against another twenty-five attackers, killing four and forcing the rest to retreat. However, an enemy soldier creeping up behind him shot him in the back. He died thirty minutes later. Keith’s bravery helped his fellow Marines and South Vietnamese soldiers hold off the attack. A bronze statue of Keith now stands in a south Omaha park. The USS Miguel Keith was commissioned on May 8, 2021.

Are we a genuine Christian or just religious?
When discussing eternal life, it brings up one of two emotions and attitudes. Those who believe in the Bible and have Christ as their Lord become excited and grateful that God has saved them and promised to be with them forever in a glorious paradise. On the other side, we find the ones who criticize and declare that God is only a dream and the Bible is a fairy tale. These are the rebellious individuals who deny His existence and mock those who stand for Him. I’m often asked to speak and pray at secular gatherings where many are not Christians, and I love these opportunities to acknowledge Jesus as the Lord and King of heaven and earth. Afterwards, the atmosphere becomes quiet and awkward, like I said something wrong. Actually, it’s the Holy Spirit causing this dividing line between the light and the darkness. The righteous rejoice while the lost try to hide in shame.
When we lay all the spiritual cards on the table, we discover only two types of spirits and two types of people. We have the born-again spirits who love and serve God and the default spirits who choose to remain the same. Since there is no middle or neutral, every person is either on one side or the other. Much like oil and water, these do not exist in harmony together. Some are good actors and can fool those around them, but God knows the hearts and minds of every soul. Like birds of a feather, whichever side they are on, they feel comfortable and agree with those who live and believe like they do. Christians sense a spiritual connection with other Christians as family, while those who reject this radical spiritual identity change feel at ease with others who walk in carnality.
I heard a story the other day that reminded me of this. There was a young lady who had lived her adult life as a prostitute and drug addict. She had been beaten, abused, was an alcoholic, and had fallen to the bottom. She was running from a man who thought he owned her. One night, she found a church whose doors were open, and she hid inside. Fortunately a compassionate nun found her and protected her. While regaining her health, she created a new identity, enrolled in a program as a postulant, working, helping, and teaching young girls. Things were looking bright for her, but she was only painting and redecorating the outside of her image, while retaining the same old desires and attitudes on the inside. At night, she would sneak out and go to bars and mingle with men just like she had done before. Six months later, she was found dead in a motel room. She tried to play both sides and failed.
This is not to say that every person who called on the Lord and fell away from Him was never truly saved. It’s possible to backslide and become spiritually lukewarm, and if we are truly born-again, the Lord will pursue us, even discipline us, as the Shepherd of the sheep to restore us back into His fold. However, if a person living in their sinful condition is not convicted by the Holy Spirit and does not feel regret and sorrow for hurting God, it’s probable they were never truly saved and are only living a pretend facade. One thing we do know is that the soul that chooses to continue in the default condition needs God’s deliverance, mercy, and love! Jesus Christ came to die on the cross, shed His blood, and rose from the dead, so that all who believe in Him can be saved.
One of the most important subjects in heaven and earth involves knowing if we are a child of God. It’s one thing for a lost person to admit they are not born again, but what about those who assume they are saved but are not? One test is evaluating our highest priorities. If we are still thinking, talking, and acting like we always did, how has God transformed us? Do you remember the moment you gave your life to Christ and made a holy vow to love and serve Him with your entire being? Since this experience of His grace redeeming us is the hope of our salvation, it’s critical to know you are now living as a reflection of His nature and character. Are you truly saved or just acting religious?

What a positive difference we could make
I was talking with a Christian brother the other day about how it seems that many people are living in sadness and discouragement, when suddenly he made a comment that caused me to think. He said that according to his studies about the Christian life, it seems to be impossible to be continually depressed and walk in the joy of God’s presence at the same time. After our conversation, I continued to ponder this statement and by the way, I do agree with it. I’m not saying that developing an optimistic lifestyle or being filled with peace and faith is easy by any stretch of the imagination, but I definitely believe it it’s a subject worth considering. We know that living in a state of contentment and joy is one of the fruits of the Spirit, so in order to walk the path of a relentless optimist, we must not only restructure our thought process, but have a sincere desire to embrace and demonstrate His divine truth which has the power to make us free.
So, why do I at times allow the melancholy feelings of despondency to influence me? It has everything to do with losing focus of the one who is the source of my strength and hope. It’s so easy to drift away from our Creator especially with all the distractions that surround and tempt us with negative persuasions. It takes a strong determination to maintain a consistent relationship with God and to abide in a constant awareness of His presence. The more we think about Him, the more we trust Him, which explains why it’s so important to develop spiritual sensitivity. Sometimes I allow my enthusiasm to be quenched by allowing fear and worry to weigh me down. The truth is that whatever we choose to agree with, is what will control our emotions. When I’ve neglected to pray, study, or to just spend quiet time with the Lord, I become distant and begin doubting that He is listening or help me with my circumstances. These are the same old lies from the dark side that is being used against us over and over. So, why would the devil change his evil tactics if we still fall for them?
Have you ever felt discouragement and condemnation from failing? Of course, we all have, but if we would spend the same amount of time trying to renew our minds, we could keep moving forward in our spiritual advancement. How often we forget that forgiveness and restoration is only a prayer away? In the book of Acts, we find a man named Barnabas who was one of those positive and optimistic personalities that we all enjoy being around. He saw the potential in others along with always having an enthusiastic attitude and a hopeful outlook on life. The Collins Dictionary defines the name Barnabas as, “Son of consolation” and the word consolation means a person or thing that is a source of comfort in a time of suffering, grief, sadness and disappointment. In chapter 11 and verses 22-24 we are given a glimpse of his nature, “And they sent out Barnabas to go as far as to Antioch. Who when he came and had seen the grace of God, he was glad, and exhorted [encouraged] them all that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, full of the Holy Ghost and faith: And a great many people were added to the Lord.”
The ministry of encouragement and vision is something that every Christian has been called to manifest and I definitely need to constantly remind myself about this important responsibility. The word encourage means to motivate others with excitement and confidence, to stimulate, influence, support, advise or urge by approval or help. I wonder when was the last time we went out of our way to encourage someone? We could all use a sincere message of hope every now and then. Maybe it’s because we are so focused on seeking peace for ourselves that we forget what others are seeing in us. What a difference it makes when someone comes alongside and says they believe in you, that you are doing a great job, and you are a light of inspiration to the world. Anne Frank is quoted as saying, “Everyone has inside them a portion of good news. You don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is.”

Straight is the gate and narrow is the way
I hope you have enjoyed the recent messages about heaven lately, and I appreciate the emails expressing your speculations. My statements are my own opinions and calculations and originate from my fascination about what our future home will be like. There are so many more questions like will we eat, what will we do, will we live in mansions, will babies be born, can our loved ones communicate with us, will our pets be there, will all of nature including our bodies remain the same throughout eternity, will there be technology, will we sleep, and so on. We realize that no one really knows the specifics of all these things we are curious about, but there are hints here and there if we take the time to study and research the scriptures. There is no need to argue about heaven, but rather let us be filled with excitement and joy to know that being with God forever (wherever we are) is the greatest miracle blessing we could ever experience.
As we have been discussing heaven, it’s been on my mind that we should be taking our spiritual relationship with the Lord very seriously and not take His grace for granted. We love to discuss how Jesus is our only hope and heaven is waiting for us, but there is also a responsibility to constantly examine and evaluate our minds and hearts to make sure we are walking on the narrow path of purity and obedience. Are we spending time each day in prayer because we love Him and those around us who need Him? Are we drawing near to Him each moment so that we can live in the awareness of His presence? Are we repenting of our sins when we disobey Him so that we can approach Him with a clean heart and a right spirit? The word I am sensing is complacent in the context of relaxing in the fact that we have been rescued and are now just waiting for our eternal reward.
As we mentioned about who will be in heaven, the Bible discloses distinct sins that He does not tolerate and are found in Proverbs 6:16-19, I Corinthians 6:9-20, Romans chapter 1, and I Timothy 1:4-11. As Philippians chapter two declares trembling and living in a reverential fear of God’s holiness, we are reminded that He does not compromise or forget anything we think or do. First Peter 1:15-17 says, “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: Be holy, because I am holy.Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear.” The word foreigners is used to explain this world is not our permanent residence as God’s children are citizens of the new heaven and earth which are coming. Temptations surround us and try to lure our carnal nature to love and embrace sin. We are being warned not to be so consumed with distractions and pleasures that we lose focus of Christ.
Another word that is similar is deception. We bristle at the possibility of us being wrong, but there are many who are not genuinely redeemed. They have head knowledge, but do not abide in a covenant relationship with the living Jesus. We have also talked about how it matters which god we love and serve, that all religions do not lead to Jesus Christ. He will not accept just any type of philosophy or ideas that humans can dream of. The God of the Bible is particular and precise when it comes to people placing their faith the blood sacrifice of Jesus, and embracing that He rose again from the dead to save them from being eternally lost. God’s grace and love transforms them into a new spiritual identity as being righteous “in Christ.” I’ve listened to many people over the years who confessed how at one time they were convinced they were born again, but later in life realized they were living an illusion.
Matthew chapter seven is disturbing as it talks about people who call on the Lord and believe they are working for Him, but He tells them on judgement day they were deceived. Again, this is why we must not assume the average decent person will automatically deserve heaven. If it was that easy, most everyone would be there. Actually, we read in Luke chapter 13 that only a remnant will enter.

Spending an eternity in one of two places
Before we move on from our topic about heaven, I want to touch on a couple more things. We mentioned last week about how the way to heaven is conditional upon being born again and doing the will of the Father. It’s true the blood of Jesus forgives our sins when we confess and repent, as holiness is not automatic but rather is accomplished through our determination to demonstrate a life of sanctification. We comprehend that salvation is intertwined with the covenant that Christ established on the cross and through His resurrection. He gave His life for us, and as we take up our cross and obey, we pledge to give all of our mind and heart to Him. Grace is not a license to sin, but an invitation to accept His glorious plan to deliver and transform our spiritual identity from death to life.
This opportunity to become a child of God is the greatest act of love and mercy the world has ever known, and we are overwhelmed with the reality that God reached down and pulled us from the darkness and doom of a hopeless future. Praise Him forever! I have some questions for us, and would like to know your convictions. We discussed who will be in heaven, but many disagree that it is not only limited to the Christian faith, but that all faiths that live in love and do good deeds will be granted acceptance. The all roads lead to heaven philosophy is popular around the world and this group is appalled that any particular religious group would claim to have exclusive rights to eternal salvation. However, Jesus made this quite clear, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” How can anyone disregard this truth and say this means any god, faith, or belief system? And, does this mean the billions of people who do not have Christ as their Lord are lost? We must reject sugar coating the truth with human philosophies, according to the Bible, yes.
So, how many souls will be in heaven? Some have estimated that all unborn babies that have died, (including abortions and being stillborn), along with every child under the age of 10 years that has passed away since Adam and Eve until now is 50 billion souls. I realize this is a staggering number, and if we believe they will all be given the gift of eternal life with God, this massive group alone gives us an idea of how many people with be there. And this is not including all the adult followers of God (and let us include all the ones with intellectual disabilities) that have passed away in the last 6000 years. In addition, there are 8 billion people currently living on the earth now, and using the narrow and broad path analogy from Jesus Himself, let’s use a 5 percent calculation for those who are born again and this adds up to another 40 million. No doubt the path to salvation is filled with denial, sacrifice, courage, faithfulness, love, resistance, and devotion to which only a remnant will endure to the end. A feature of the new heaven and earth will be the 2 million square mile glorious city of new Jerusalem where all the saints will live with God forever.
Another doctrine that is difficult to comprehend is our free will choice verses God’s divine election or predestination. I’ve come to the conclusion that we are given free will since the Bible emphasizes our ability to choose within passages such as John 7:17, 3:16, Revelation 22:17, Romans 6:15-23, Galatians 5:11, Joshua 24:15 and many others, yet we must also embrace the scriptures that explain His sovereign choices like Jeremiah 1:4-5, Romans 8:29, Matthew 22:14, Acts 13:48, Ephesians 1:11, and Ephesians 1:4-5, “According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will.” Nothing happens without God deciding. Do you believe His power to draw us to Him is based on His foreknowledge of who He knows will serve Him, or an intentional act of His sovereignty? Were individuals such as Jesus, Mary, the disciples, John the Baptist, Moses and Abraham predestined? Can the doctrine of Calvinism and Arminianism work together? I believe they are both a part of God’s plan.

On earth as it is in heaven
LIVING ON PURPOSE – By William F. Holland Jr.
This week we continue with our discussion about heaven, and realize we’ve left many stones unturned. Even though our knowledge of the next life is sparse by design, our curiosity makes this a popular subject. There are countless speculations of what heaven will be like and like all of you I have my own thoughts. I appreciate all the emails about your thoughtsand I agree with the general consensus that seeing God in person is going to far outweigh our surroundings. We know that whatever He has prepared for us will be a million times more breathtaking than anything we could imagine, and our fascination will be focused on spending an eternity with the one who loves and saves us.
Our Bible has 66 books that were written by different people and to say the least, it’s a challenge to understand. Many believe there is only one interpretation of these truths, yet disagreements have divided God’s people since it was written. If there is only one truth of His written word, why can’t every Christian hear the Holy Spirit? Arguing and fighting does not usually convince anyone who has already made up their mind. I’ve studied the Bible for nearly 50 years, and what I’ve learned about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, has not come from others, but rather talking and listening to Him directly. The Bible is our general guide, but knowing Him personally comes from quiet times of intimacy with Him. We can train ourselves to converse with Him in our minds and listen for His still small voice which develops spiritual sensitivity and an awareness of His presence.
We say we cannot wait to worship Jesus in person, or to have a chance to serve Him with all of our hearts, but it strikes me as odd to see some who lack enthusiasm about abiding with Him now. Many believe that in heaven He will be the center of every thought and deed, as He helps, teaches, and guides us. These are truly dreams of bliss for the follower of Christ, but I thought He wanted to be the Lord of our lives in this life. Maybe our lack of concentration is caused by not being able to literally see or hear Him. Most envision one day standing around His throne with their hands raised and voices lifted high in continuous worship as the Bible declares that He is worthy to receive all glory and adoration for all eternity. Listen to Revelation chapter 5 verses 11 through 13.
“Then I looked, and heard the voice of many angels around the throne, the living creatures, and the elders; and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice: ‘Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom, And strength and honor and glory and blessing!’And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, I heard saying: “Blessing and honor and glory and power be to Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, forever and ever!” There is no doubt we will spend plenty of time, (even though measured time will be no more) around God’s throne, but I’m also convinced we will be involved with working, serving, helping, blessing, and accomplishing His desires.
So, who is going to heaven? Most will say those who have been born again which means being transformed into a new spiritual identity as Jesus shared with Nicodemus. Does this happen instantly or is it a gradual progression? This sounds simple, but it’s not. In fact, it could be one of the most misconstrued concepts in the New Testament as Christ also declared in Matthew 7:21 that eternal salvation includes doing God’s will. Regardless of the modern easy path theologies, the gift of heaven is not just handed out to everyone who says they want a free ticket. God will not be deceived. The perception of just believing that He is real as a prerequisite for eternal life is a terrible misunderstanding, as even the devil and the demons believe, fear, and tremble in His presence. Of course, no one wants to suffer for all eternity, but taking up our cross is a lot more than just hoping that God is like a lenient grandfather.

Eternal life is a reality
We spoke last week about the holy city of God coming down to sit on the earth often referred to as Zion or Mount Zion, Bride of Christ, Tabernacle of God, City of God, City of the Great King, Celestial City, City Foursquare, and Heavenly Jerusalem. After the millennium, many believe this will be the eternal home of believers called heaven. A realm beyond the imagination where God as The eternal Lord and King literally dwells and rules from His throne with His followers forever. Isaiah chapter 65 and second Peter chapter 3 talk about the new heavens and the new earth along with other passages concerning heaven like John chapter 14, Philippians 3, and Hebrews 11.
I realize that many people have their own thoughts about where heaven will be and what will be there, and I admit I’ve had my share of ideas. When I was a kid, I daydreamed of heaven as a place that is trillions of light years beyond the galaxies where we could fly anywhere in the cosmos with unimaginable supernatural abilities. I envisioned communication with telepathy and indescribable ideas related to the mysteries of another dimension. However, when we take a closer look, we notice that we are not traveling a long way to get to heaven, but according to many Bible scholars, heaven is actually coming here. Yes, it will be mesmerizing, but we also notice it will contain familiar things that are similar to what we have now.
We’ve seen pictures of people floating on clouds playing harps, and this eternal lounging sounds nice, but according to the Bible, worship, and singing are not all we will do. I might add that many do not really like to sing or worship now. Many scholars say the scriptures reveal we will have a chance to exercise our gifts and talents in a far greater way than we ever imagined. There will be much to do, and yes, work and responsibility will be a part of it. On earth, our labors are tiresome and frustrating, but in a sinless environment that is free from the curse, not only will we have a joyful, loving, and patient attitude, but we will have endless strength and excitement. Our lives will be victorious since He is the glorious conquering Lamb of God, and because of His grace, we will be anointed and blessed in everything we put our hands to. The light of His majesty will illuminate heaven as we will never need to sleep, and never be sick, depressed, disappointed, or discouraged.
A question I receive often is when we die (including all the people that have passed since Adam and Eve), do we go straight to heaven or do we go somewhere to wait for the judgment? This is an excellent study for those who are interested in the subject, and it might surprise you. The verse in Second Corinthians 5:8 that says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, is commonly used when talking about the moment of death. I’ve heard this all my life in context to all saints being instantly with Jesus and it’s technically true. (Actually, I’ve never attended a funeral where the person who passed was not declared to be in the arms of Christ no matter if they were a Christian or not). However, some teachers are convinced that instead of entering heaven to see God face to face, there is a temporary realm called Sheol, or the grave where all spirits wait until after the final resurrection.
Some say that all believers enjoy a peaceful awareness of God’s presence in what is called Paradise or Abraham’s bosom, and after the resurrection when we are given our new glorified bodies, we will spend eternity in the heaven Jesus promised to prepare. The other compartment of Sheol has the non-believers who are experiencing the dark and dreadful realm called Hades. The lost are awaiting the final judgment where they will be sentenced to spend an eternity in Gehenna or hell without the light, love, and presence of God. We notice when Jesus was on the cross, one man begged that He remember him, and Christ replied, “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” Do you believe Jesus went to Sheol and preached the good news of His love to those in Paradise and Hades? I would like to know what you think. Psalmz103@gmail.com

The King and His Heaven are coming
Have you noticed when we are young we seldom think about the afterlife since we are so focused on this one? However, as we grow older, we become more curious. May we realize that all we have to base our theology on is the Bible. I believe in visions and dreams, but I do not know anyone personally who claims they have been to heaven, however, I’ve heard a lot of people say they have. Even though near-death and out-of-body experiences about heaven are common, I’m not going to discredit those who believe they have encountered a glimpse of our eternal existence. However, it is worth noting that Jesus makes a profound statement about this in John 3:13.
Years ago I was studying about the end times as I was teaching some eschatology classes and began focusing on what the next life will be like. There are a few places in the Bible that give hints as to what we will see and do in heaven. Still, like other subjects much of it is controversial because of different interpretations and whether the text should be understood as literal or symbolical. We read in I Corinthians chapter two that, “Eye hath not seen, not ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for them that love Him” but if we keep reading within the context of the passage we see that God does reveal spiritual truth through the Holy Spirit.
I praise God for all the letters I receive from those who are blessed by these messages, but we all know the minute I start talking about doctrines many feathers will be ruffled. So, to prevent anger and hard feelings, I try to focus on subjects about the Christian life that most of us can agree with. Even though many believers do not study on their own, have never graduated from seminary, or are daily prayer warriors, Christians are not lacking in the area of having strong opinions about what they believe. For the majority, the religious knowledge they have accumulated throughout their lives has come from what they heard someone else say, but we have been commanded by God in Second Timothy the second chapter to rightly divide the scriptures for ourselves through unbiased research and diligent study.
There is also a faithful group of truth seekers who attend adult Sunday school classes and Bible studies and study on their own which gives them confidence to draw their own conclusions. I admit that my views have changed over the years as the more I learn, the more I see things differently. I do not think this is a bad thing seeing that as we mature, we are developing and expanding in our wisdom and understanding. When talking about our eternal abode with God, let us agree as His children, that where we are going and what it will contain is not as important as being with the one we love more than anyone or anything.
We are to be revealing the nature and character of Christ within our lives here on earth now since we are made in His image to reflect His glory. Likewise, the earth is a type and shadow of heaven according to Hebrews chapters 8 and 9 and was made after the pattern of where God lives. We recall the first verse of the Bible in Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning God created the Heavens and the Earth” and from the mention of both realms in the same sentence we see a connection between the spiritual domain of God’s throne and the natural realm which was made later that reflects similar attributes such as a tabernacle, sanctuary, priest, light, worship, rivers, trees, fruit, streets, banquets, cities, and so on. Cities? Yes, the Bible says the holy city of Jerusalem will come down from heaven and literally sit upon the earth.
We are told in Revelation chapters 21 and 22 about how God will one day do away with the old heaven and earth and will create a brand new heaven and earth. In Christian eschatology, the New Jerusalem, represents heaven coming down and sitting upon the new earth. We should be filled with excitement to know that one day we will be with Him when our spirit and new body are united and we will live in His presence forever. Spending eternity with our Lord is so encouraging and I welcome your thoughts about this fascinating subject.

Taking a moment to think out loud
LIVING ON PURPOSE – By William F. Holland Jr.
Life is filled with ups and downs, joy and good times mixed in with seasons of discouragement and sadness. I do not believe in a perfect life here on earth and this includes any human living above the reproach of sin and of course, all of us having everything perfect within our hopes and dreams of happiness. Even the individuals who have billions of dollars in the bank have times of frustration and disappointment. For example, those who cruise the seas on luxury yachts have engine breakdowns and stormy weather. Or how about those who have all the money they could ever spend but are so sick they cannot get out of bed? It’s just not a perfect world.
I was thinking the other day, I know I’m blessed and appreciate all the Lord has done for me. I’m not rich according to the world’s standards, but I can pay my bills and enjoy being debt-free. We have two grown children who married amazing spouses and we have some incredibly adorable and intelligent grandchildren. I do have some health issues, but I’m still walking, I can see and live relatively pain-free. I have a beautiful wife and we have a great marriage. Is everything perfect? Of course not, but I know without a doubt that at our age, we are very fortunate. I provide family counseling and also help minister to those who are incarcerated, and with a hurting heart, there are a lot of families that are struggling.
I understand that many of you who read this column have also been blessed in the same way and I rejoice with you. For those who are facing serious challenges in certain areas of your lives, we pray for strength, patience, and encouragement as you keep knocking, seeking, and asking the Lord to intervene. This passage in Matthew 7:7-8 is a wonderful promise directly from Jesus. “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock and will be opened unto you: for everyone that asks receives, and he that seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.”
Some of you might be sarcastically saying, “Well good for you!” Even though I’m thankful to share my testimony of how compassionate He has been to me, this is just the good side of it. There have been plenty of times when I’ve been perplexed and cast down and all the things that Second Corinthians chapter four talks about. However, I’ve learned when things turn sour, I can make a list of how bad things really could be. Does this make sense? If you try this, it doesn’t take long before an attitude of humility and gratitude fills your mind and soul. Verse nine reminds us we might be struck down but we are not destroyed. Amen! This is when the song, “My Life Is in You” by Steve Kuban really hits home.
Others might say that asking God for help sounds cheesy, and just too easy, but whoever said praying and fasting for as long as needed was a piece of cake? As we mentioned earlier about God knowing our hearts, fluff prayers, whims, and casual requests rarely carry any level of seriousness or dedication. You see, only calling on God when we are in trouble is not the same as walking in His Spirit all the time. When you have a minute, read John chapter 15 as it explains how we are bonded together with Christ. To abide in His presence is the core of our personal relationship with Him, and when we study our covenant vow with Him, we see it is a holy and “constant” commitment of obedience.
The excitement and enthusiasm of our spiritual walk will be in direct proportion to the conviction held in our reverence for God’s truth. Since He has infinite understanding and insight of the motives within our conscience we can never hide or deceive Him. Hebrews 4:12 reveals that He knows when we are sincere and when we are faking. He can see clearly when our words are empty and have no meaning and when they are filled with honesty and purity. Jesus desires that we stop being an actor and start becoming who He died for us to be. This week I just wanted to share from my soul and hope you were edified in some small way. As God uses His word to touch hearts He is glorified.

God’s commandment is God’s enablement
Every Christian has been given a mission and some type of ministry. Gifts, talents, and special abilities are distributed from God within the personal blueprint of our calling. Yes, all of God’s people have the responsibility to pray and obey, but like our fingerprints, each mission is unique. Helen Keller is quoted as saying, “The only thing worse than being physically blind is not having spiritual vision.”
It’s imperative that we examine our hearts and become familiar with our destiny. When we speak of ministry, we often think of what type of special ability we have, however, the level of our skill is not our highest form of service. Demonstrating the character of Christ proves our love for Him and is more valuable than our talents. Many times people will use and abuse their heavenly gifts to bring glory to themselves and this was not God’s intention. Paul writes in Colossians 3:17, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.”
I believe humility is essential since most of what we do in public ministry is seen by others. Pride is a snare trap that loves to tempt and shift the attention from God to how smart and anointed we are. The awareness of our Creator who leads and empowers us to do His will is what allows us to remain in an attitude of reverence toward Him. Someone said, “When self is on the throne, Christ is on the cross, but when Christ is on the throne self is on the cross.” It’s clear that what we do is not as important as why we do it. Let’s look into this a little further.
The passage in Matthew 7:21-23 that talks about God rejecting certain religious individuals on judgment day causes us to scratch our heads because it seems that God is not appreciating their service. So, what happened? I’ve had people tell me they are perplexed and even worried about this, but I believe Jesus is warning His children that simply claiming to be a follower or doing nice deeds cannot earn eternal salvation. We must be spiritually transformed through the blood of Christ and become His disciple that gives us the passion to only do His will – not ours. He isn’t ending a relationship with them, but rather is stating they never had a genuine relationship with Him. It seems we desire His power and praise but do not want Him to control us.
When we are learning how to use our gift from the Lord, we realize that spiritual visions will most likely require natural resources and more support than just a pat on the back. Indeed, His Kingdom is not dependent on money, but somewhere, somehow, finances are usually involved. Personally, I’m cautious about focusing too much on money and more on extending my faith that God is in charge. I have a note posted on my desk that says, “Where God guides He provides.” We know that He can open the windows of miracle blessings to make His plans a reality, so our job is to keep praying and preparing to move in His timing. After we know His plans, we must trust Him. If our dreams never come to pass, it was either because we misunderstood, disobeyed, or it was not His will.
The beauty of our redemption is not earned by our achievements, but rather is woven together with our covenant bond of accountability to manifest the image of Jesus at all times. The intentional act of the Son of God suffering on the cross for us is not only to pay for our sin but should be the center of our love and dedication to reflect His glory. When we understand we are no longer following our emotional desires and understand what God wants us to be and do in this life, we can then concentrate on interceding for His divine wisdom and direction.
May we acknowledge that God deserves all the glory, and as we become more mature we too will become more and more about His glory instead of our own. Let us heed the words of John the Baptist in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” The message of Jesus strongly emphasizes the importance of personally knowing God and loving Him with one’s whole heart, not just going through the motions of performing religious endeavors.

What does let your glory fall mean?
Some Christians might think this is a silly question because asking for God’s glory to fall is such a popular phrase in church environments. Since we notice entire congregations singing about it in their worship services, we assume that everyone knows what it means, right? It depends on the depth of an individual’s knowledge and personal experiences. We realize we are all still learning and growing in our understanding of God and the Christian’s narrow path, and I believe this is a topic that is worth taking a closer look.
I’ve had the privilege of leading worship throughout my adult life, and since worship is such an important part of our relationship with God, I take it very seriously. I pray and ask the Holy Spirit to inspire me when selecting songs and believe just as pastors seek direction with their messages that God can reveal how He wants to touch His people. To me, church is not just a place we gather just because it’s Sunday, but it’s a holy and special opportunity where God’s people can see the demonstration of God’s glory.
Our worship music includes the deepest expression of adoration to God and this is wonderful, and let us never come to the place where the words become mundane and boring. It’s seldom mentioned, but the level of what the Lord demonstrates in churches and how much of a blessing we receive is based on the attitude of the individual. If a person comes to church with a heavy heart, bombarded with stress and worries from their job, finances, health, family, or relationship problems, these distractions will prevent them from absorbing the personal awareness of His presence and His miracle power to deliver and heal. How can we receive or be used without faith or expectation?
I’ve experienced this myself and whether on stage where I’m dialed into God’s presence, or seeking the Lord in the audience, it takes a lot of concentration to stay focused on Jesus. We often forget that God may not be pouring out His Spirit because the majority of the congregation is struggling with sin issues which in turn causes us to avoid sincerely crying out for Him to flood the atmosphere with His glory. Another reason that will hinder a service and cause it to be nothing more than a religious ritual is placing an emphasis on a traditional program instead of allowing God to manifest His will in the meeting.
Just as a farmer plows the ground before he sows the seed, we have the responsibility to pray for discernment and sensitivity before we enter the sanctuary to be prepared for what the Lord wants to do. When you have time, look at the lyrics of songs such as, Revelation Song, I Am Not My Own, I Love Your Presence, You Are My King, I Surrender All, and Living Sacrifice. These are amazing examples of the seriousness of what we are promising and asking of God. These are vows we are making and if we are not even thinking about what we are saying it’s only a religious facade.
When we sing, Let your glory fall upon us, we are saying our lives are pure and holy and we are ready to do whatever it takes to please Him. It’s not just religious jargon. Remember when the high priest would enter into the holy of holies, they would tie a rope around his ankle in case he was not sincere and he would die and they would pull his body out. Have we considered that God wants His people to enter into His sanctuary with this same reverential fear? He has not changed and still requires this same attitude of respect at all times.
You see it’s easy to sing songs and listen to devotions, but do we mean what we are singing and are we going to follow and obey the instructions from those who help teach us? Our lukewarmness enjoys the comforts and security of a predictable gathering but becomes uneasy and apprehensive when God shows up. Are we hiding from Him? The next time we sing songs like, Set A Fire, Holy Spirit You Are Welcome, Break Every Chain, and Show Me Your Glory, let us realize this is our testimony and approach these declarations with the same humility and brokenness as when we receive holy communion. I’m sure it will help transform and renew our minds and create a stronger awareness of His presence more than ever.

God is transmitting but are we dialed in?
As followers of Christ, we have the opportunity to become as close to God as we desire, and the result is an increased spiritual sensitivity where we can recognize and understand what God is saying. I’ve spoken with many Christians about this and very few develop a habit of intentionally listening to the Holy Spirit for an increased spiritual awareness of His presence? Discerning wisdom that is hidden from our earthly understanding is having a desire to be led by God according to what we sense He wants to reveal to us. The Lord asked Solomon what he desired, and the king replied “Spiritual wisdom and discernment” which pleased God.
The majority who were raised with traditional Christian doctrines accept Biblical prophecy, but for the most part, believe this ability has passed away. Since many are taught cessationism theology they naturally do not seek to be used in these gifts, all the while singing songs about opening our spiritual eyes and being filled with His Spirit. Which by the way is the empowerment for spiritual fruits and gifts. In John 16:13 we read, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” This subject is critically important as it’s directly involved with our personal relationship with our Lord.
For example, when we hold a tiny baby in our arms, can we literally discern how devoted they will be to God, or do we just feel the natural and physical possibilities with our emotions? In Luke chapter two, we read about an individual named Simeon who was a spiritually dedicated man of prayer and fasting and is described in verse 25, as “righteous and devout with the Holy Spirit upon him.” He was there when Mary and Joseph brought baby Jesus (who was probably no more than a month old) to be dedicated at the temple according to the Law of Moses. God had promised this elderly man that he would not pass away until he had seen the King of kings and on the day that Mary and Joseph went to the temple, Simeon encountered the divine appointment of meeting this special family.
When he looked at Jesus, he reached out and held him and said, “For with my eyes I have seen the Lord’s salvation.” Simeon proceeded to prophesy over the child and even though Mary and Joseph were already aware that Jesus was the Savior of the world, they still marveled at Simeon’s words. How did he know? Allow us to pause a moment and realize this man could have only recognized the Christ child if he had been walking with a high level of spiritual sensitivity. Mary and Joseph appeared to be just another normal family that blended in with the massive crowd and yet Simeon immediately identified the one called Emmanuel.
Later in the same chapter, we learn about an elderly prophetess named Anna who also worshiped and prayed to God in the temple night and day. She was there and also recognized baby Jesus as the Son of God. Anna, who some have calculated to have been over 100 years old, not only knew who He was but boldly prophesied how this child would be the redeemer of God’s people. Strangely we do not read of anyone bowing down to worship the Messiah. Those who passed by probably thought, “Now isn’t that sweet, a nice elderly lady making over a newborn baby” and then went on about their business. However, let us make note of why no one else was ecstatic. Since they were not walking in discernment they were unable to perceive that God was right in front of them.
In first Corinthians 2:14 says, “But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them, and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means.” I believe the Lord is trying to say that our lack of spiritual sensitivity is the reason why many times we do not notice His presence in our everyday lives. Yes, we are very busy, and our minds are filled with all the things we need to do, while sadly our most important responsibility is ignored. How can we hear God’s instructions if our receiver is not dialed to the right frequency?

Staff Sergeant Reckless – No greater love
This is a true story about a horse named Reckless who served in numerous combat operations during the Korean War, carrying supplies and ammunition, and was also used to evacuate the wounded. We often do not consider the intelligence of God’s creation and how loving and loyal they can be. She was chestnut colored with a blaze and three white stockings. Her bloodline is unconfirmed but was thought to be primarily Mongolian. However, she did have some features, particularly the shape of her head, that were similar to horses of Thoroughbred lineage. She was small, standing only 14 hands and weighing 900 pounds. She was estimated to be around three or four years old when she was purchased by Marine Lieutenant Eric Pedersen in October 1952 for $250.
As a racehorse, she was sold to the Marines by her owner, a young Korean stable boy who had named the horse “Ah Chim Hae” which is translated “Light of Dawn.” He said he needed the money to purchase an artificial leg for his sister who had stepped on a landmine. The marines were fighting on difficult mountain terrain and needed help carrying heavy mortar shells to the front line. Little did they know this pack horse would become a fearless hero of the ages. The soldiers renamed her “Reckless” as a contraction of the name of the Recoilless rifles that she would be supplying with ammunition, and a nod to the daredevil attitude associated with those who were experts with these weapons.
She picked up communication quickly as they taught her battlefield survival skills such as how not to become entangled in Barbed wire and to lie down when under fire. She learned to run for a bunker when hearing the cry, “Incoming!” When learning a new delivery route, Reckless would only need someone to lead her a few times, and from then on she would make the trips on her own. When not in battle, Reckless carried other items for the platoon, and was particularly useful for stringing telephone wire. Carrying heavy reels of wire on her back as she walked, she could string as much wire as twelve men on foot. Recognized for her astounding intelligence, she quickly became a respected and beloved member of the unit and was allowed to roam freely through camp, entering their tents and sleeping next to their stoves on cold nights. She was known for her willingness to eat nearly anything, including bacon and scrambled eggs, beer, soft drinks, even her blankets, and once, about $30 worth of poker chips.
The highlight of her nine-month military career came in late March 1953 during the Battle for Outpost Vegas when, in a single day, she made 51 solo trips carrying a total of 386 rounds (over 9,000 pounds) and covering over 35 miles. On her return trips back to camp, she would carry wounded or deceased soldiers. This battle lasted 3 days in which she was wounded twice by shrapnel over the left eye and another injury to her left flank. For her tremendous accomplishments during this battle, Reckless became the first animal to receive the military rank of corporal and later was promoted to sergeant. She also became the first horse in the Marine Corps known to have participated in an amphibious landing.
Books and songs have been written about her, and after she was retired and brought to the United States after the war, she made appearances on television and special events. She was officially promoted to staff sergeant in 1959 by the Commandment of the Marine Corps. She gave birth to four foals in the U.S. and passed away in May 1968. Numerous statues and plaques have been made in her honor and for her exemplary service to the Marine Corps, Reckless was awarded two Purple Hearts, a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation with bronze star, the National Defense Service Medal, a Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, the United Nations Korea Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, and the Animals in War and Peace Medal of Bravery, among others. In 1997, Reckless was listed by LIFE magazine as one of America’s 100 all-time heroes.
I wrote a story a couple of years ago about another magnificent horse named Beautiful Jim Key and his ability to read and count. I love and admire all animals and more than just how smart and innocent they are, I’m amazed at how they love us unconditionally.

Love that cares enough to get involved
We do not have to look very far to find someone that is struggling. Many are suffering from a crisis of health problems, their children, grieving over a loss, financial worries, marriage issues, and the list goes on. When difficult situations are presented, we become sympathetic, but how often do we consider that God may have brought these individuals to our attention so that we can not only pray but actually intervene and help in some tangible way? Instead of just discussing the suffering and having pity, with God’s power we can help with what they are praying for. James chapter two talks about the difference between having faith without becoming involved and literally demonstrating our faith by our willingness to reach out and be a friend in need.
Have you ever been discouraged or in trouble and you cried out for God to please send help? If someone responded, you knew they were a Godsend, right? But if no one came, we assumed the Lord convicted someone to intervene, but they were probably busy and distracted or maybe they simply did not want to get involved. I believe this reveals more about what life is really about than we care to consider. Many are convinced they are free to live however they want and I can understand this point of view for a non-Christian. However, for those who are followers of God, the Bible clearly explains we are to take the responsibility to develop a new way of thinking. A renewed mind will rearrange our priorities from having a selfish attitude to being selfless.
This transformation produces what we call spiritual discernment where the individual becomes more sensitive to God’s presence. God is always speaking, but the question is are we close enough to Him to hear His voice? I thought we were to be developing the attributes and character of Jesus. I Corinthians 6:19-20 says, “What? Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own? For you are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which is God’s.” Accepting the life-changing gift of salvation includes the vow to let go of our rebellion and become focused on the two greatest commandments which is loving God with all of our heart and loving others as ourselves.
The Bible refers to those who become God’s children as instruments and vessels of honor, which means we are called to serve. God’s plan for His children is to grow strong in spiritual awareness and be ready to respond when He calls, (which by the way there is much to do). He may be guiding and preparing us to present a Bible scripture with a friend at work or maybe write a letter to someone we are concerned about. There are so many opportunities all around us where we could bring encouragement, but will we?
I’m sure you’ve had times when you could have used someone’s kindness. To know that someone is thinking about us and cares enough to make an intentional effort to bless us gives us hope. We all want to feel loved and respected. Galatians chapter six talks about our deeds being like seeds and that we reap according to what we sow. Applying this spiritual principle to our lives allows us to see how important it is to care about others in the same way we would like someone to care about us. If you need a miracle, become someone’s miracle. If you desire to have more friends, go out of your way to be friendly. If you want to be loved, cast down fear and intimidation and show sincere love. Yes, God can arrange divine appointments but obeying is our freewill choice. Not only out of moral obligation but because we are filled with the compassion of Christ.
Jesus told a parable in Luke chapter ten about a man who was attacked by thieves and left beside the road for dead. Two different men in the community came upon the situation (one of them a minister) and both ignored him. Then a Samaritan man found him and literally saved his life. The good Samaritan became the wounded man’s miracle and presents the question from deep within our conscience; are we the type who passes by and looks the other way, or the one who stops and becomes involved?

Lord forgive me and I will be clean
God’s love and His provision of eternal salvation is the greatest peace and security we could ever hope for. We heard His truth, became convicted, we saw our need for a Savior, and by faith we repented of our sin, and cried out for Him to save us. Second Corinthians assures us that when we receive Jesus as our Lord, our old spirit becomes converted into a brand new creation.
Within this process, we became a child of God and our names were written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. How do we know this? Because the Bible teaches in many places including John 3:16, that whoever places their trust in God shall be saved. After we repent and are baptized, God’s plan is for us to be filled with the Holy Spirit, grow strong in our faith, and become spiritually mature as the goal is to take on His nature and character – to be more like Him.
If there comes a time when we intentionally step off the narrow path, we can become what is called lukewarm or backslidden. I sing an old song called, “Your drifting too far from the shore” which is saying the Lord is beckoning for you to return to Him. Yes, we all sin, but this does not mean we are lost again. The Holy Spirit will always convict God’s children to repent and then lead them back into a right relationship with Him. Remember the passage in Matthew 18:12 where Jesus leaves the ninety-nine to bring the one sheep back into the fold. He loves His children and will never give up on us when we stray.
Romans chapter 6 explains about the transformed life and the dangers of sin after we are born-again. We should be encouraged to know that we cannot be made to disobey God as sin cannot overcome us or hold us captive any longer. Verse 14 says, “For sin shall not have dominion over you: you are no longer under the law, but now under His grace.” Verse 16 makes it clear that if we are drawn back into the darkness of disobedience, it is because we made the decision to follow the enemy and turn away from God. “Don’t you realize that you choose your own master? You can embrace sin and death or obedience to God. The one to whom you offer yourself, they will be your master, and you will be their slave. Do you not comprehend that when you yield yourselves to either God or the devil, you reveal the one you truly love?”
The point is that when we sin, we do not need to be saved and baptized again, we simply need to to be sorrowful for our rebellion and to repent for how we allowed our carnality to control us and disappoint Him. Sin should make the child of God nauseated and if it is not a big deal, that individual has lost their reverential fear of God’s holiness. He is faithful to forgive and restore all those who are sincere, and this allows us to recommit to our promises to love and serve Him and be rededicated into our personal relationship with Him.
First John 1:6-10 reminds us of His willingness to forgive and reconcile us back to Him. Verse nine says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Psalm 51 is a beautiful collection of verses for repentant prayer. Verses 10-12, “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and sustain me by your mercy.”
Romans chapter 6 is such an amazing explanation of how a Christian has died to sin and buried with Christ in His death, then we are resurrected into a new person as Christ rose from the dead by the glory of God the Father. This allows us to walk confidently in the newness of life as Romans 5:1-2 declares, that we have been justified by faith, which gives us peace. May we wake up every morning and ask for an awareness of God’s presence, to be focused on Christ and willing to do His will. Yes, we will be tempted to sin, but we have been given the freedom to choose good or evil.

Understanding is not needed to appreciate
The vast complexity of the human mind has fascinated mankind since the beginning. As our divine book of instruction, the Bible says that as a man or woman thinks, so are they. Since we are the accumulation of our thoughts, we cannot overly stress the importance of believing what is true in order to live in God’s favor. This sounds easy and I guess it could be if we lived in a secluded garden where all there was to do is take care of the landscaping and play with the animals. However, when Satan was allowed access to the garden to tempt and influence humans, they began to reason within their minds and consider possibilities they had never dreamed of before. Once men and women understood good from evil, a new world of choosing and decision-making began and since that time life has been a minefield of heartaches and disappointments.
There are indeed different personalities, and to have a simple mindset is not necessarily a bad thing nor to be viewed as a criticism. These are people who enjoy living in peace and are cautious to avoid turning everything into a chaotic argument. In some cases, we assume they are content to have faith in what they believe is true and do not need to spend every moment trying to search for more evidence to prove something. They have learned and accepted knowledge, and consider perception to be an anchor for their soul. On the other hand, we see others who are never satisfied with accepting anything just because someone said it. These were born with a shovel in their hands who relentlessly dig for more clues.
When we look at the differences between these two character dispositions, we wonder which one is enjoying life more. Is one way of thinking to be desired over the other? According to our imagination, believing what is true should be the path to contentment, however, accumulating more knowledge within itself is not the secret to greater fulfillment. Why not? When we keep our thoughts simple we are not burdened with trying to understand things that lead us into endless questions and possibilities. I realize this statement is unacceptable to those who like to play the devil’s advocate, but spending our lives trying to argue points on every topic usually produces more speculations and theories. The simple view is that we do not need to know all the whys and hows about everything to admire and appreciate them.
What we intentionally accept as valid, creates and leads our convictions on a pathway that we will walk unless we discover new evidence that challenges us to restructure our views. Let’s say a person is an atheist and one night they have a tangible encounter with God and they now know He is real. The point is that it’s not a terrible thing to change our minds when we discover a reality that proves we were wrong, even if it causes our peers to reject us. This is the beauty of being open-minded to what the Lord wants to reveal.
The first chapter of James talks about the importance of obtaining divine wisdom and developing a strong faith to embrace it. Living a basic life that is focused on obeying and loving God might sound too simple for those who have spent their lives gathering knowledge, however, would we rather walk in optimism and confidence of being aware of God’s presence, or fluctuate in a frustrating whirlwind of discontent and uncertainty? The context is teaching a single vision within our minds. When referring to asking for wisdom verse 6-8 says, “But let them ask in faith, nothing wavering. For those who waver are like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that person think they will receive anything from the Lord. A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways.”
When we sort through our thoughts about God and the vast realms of mysteries, we must be on guard against becoming distracted by an overload of speculations. Yes, humans are generally curious, but confusion leads to doubt and this is one way the enemy of our souls can cause us to drift away from our faith in God. Ask the Lord to give you His wisdom and as James 1:4 reminds us, “Let patience have her perfect work, that you may be mature and complete, lacking nothing.”

God always answers our prayers
I receive questions about God and the Bible, and one of the more frequent is whether God really listens and answers prayer. We know He answers every request because of His promise in I John 5:14-15. “And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of Him.” Since we believe the Bible is true, this is an amazing passage, but, it’s not the same as a signed blank check. Read again carefully and notice it says “according to His will.”
This means we do not always receive everything we want exactly like we want it. It’s true He doesn’t ignore us and is always listening, but He also has a master plan for everything and everyone including our life and how we are connected with everyone around us. It’s important to consider what an influence and impact our miracle may have on others and how it might interfere with His divine design. There are many verses we can incorporate into this vast subject, such as Matthew 6:6, and 7:7-11, but to make a long story short, our point is that He will always answer yes, no, or maybe later. In this light, unless we are perfectly in tune with His Spirit, we will not always be happy with the answer.
I believe one of the greatest obstacles that prevents people from receiving their prayer requests is a lack of understanding. I’m not referring to denying the promises of God, but it’s not accepting His declarations as a personal promise to a specific situation. For example, when those on their deathbed are reminded that God can heal, they will agree that He said this. However, the individual must have faith that Christ wants to heal them as His perfect will. Another crucial component when praying and meditating is to let God speak. He is always willing to reveal His will to us, but we are so busy talking we forget to listen. Let us begin the conversation by asking Him to show us His desires which in turn will allow us to know what to pray for.
We hear about intercessory prayer where Jesus places burdens upon the hearts of individuals to reveal His secrets and mysteries. Would you like to walk and talk with Him in this way? The opportunity to abide in His presence is available for anyone who has a sincere passion to develop a deeper relationship with Him. Truly we can be as close to God as we want, but it’s difficult to concentrate while allowing our flesh to distract us. Most Christians find themselves in a tug of war, doing whatever they want that satisfies the flesh while feeling guilty for not being more serious about the Lord. We will never be in control of our carnality until we develop a renewed mind. Yes, it’s spiritual warfare, and to be an overcomer for God demands transformation and self-discipline. How could anything be more important or joyful than drawing nearer to Jesus?
My wife Cheryl has been having stomach and esophagus problems for a long time. For the last several months she has been having consultations with surgeons, endoscopes, and biopsies. Waiting for test results is grueling but it’s also a perfect opportunity to allow patience to have her perfect work. She just received news there is no cancer right before Christmas. She does have some slow-growing endocrine tumors in her stomach lining, but nothing to be worried about. We are grateful to God for His mercy and believe He is healing and protecting her. She has been healed several times in her life and it would be wrong not to acknowledge Him as Jehovah Rapha, “The Lord who heals.” A special thank you to everyone who has been praying for her.
Jehovah Rapha was revealed to the Israelites after they crossed the Red Sea in Exodus 15:26, and is a promise of God’s power and faithfulness to intervene, mend, repair, renew, or restore any type of physical, spiritual, mental, or emotional infirmity. If you know He is saying yes to your situation, read Psalm 103:1-5 and extend your unwavering faith to believe that God means what He says. Let’s remember, the most important accomplishment we could ever hope for in our lives is that God would be glorified.

Having a covenant relationship with God
The Almighty is always faithful, He never fails, and if we take a closer look throughout our past, we notice that He has been working in our lives even when it did not seem like it. It’s been said that God’s care for His children is like the sun: it’s constant. Even though the clouds often obscure it, this does not mean it’s not there. We might not have everything we asked for, and sometimes we are thankful we did not receive the thing we begged for. I remember the song, “Thank God for unanswered prayers” which allows us to realize that God can see the future and always has our best interest in mind whether we want to admit it or not. Have you considered how many times He protected you from a terrible thing that could have happened?
We are still in January, and this coming year, may you discover the wonders of God’s love and receive the peace and contentment you are searching for. Beyond the resolutions, and hopes that everything will work out, we are going to face some unpleasant situations. This is not heaven, and we are still living under the curse of the fall which includes the probabilities of pain, sorrow, and disappointment. On the flip side, we have the opportunity to draw as close to God as we desire. This sounds easy, but as we know there is much more to walking the narrow path than warm and fuzzy statements. We enjoy hearing about what Christ has promised, but we do not like the all the things we need to do to make it work. A covenant is not just one sided.
I was raised in church and have been involved in many assemblies for the years. Each week pastors present messages that basically challenge and encourage the listener to incorporate God’s word into hearts and minds which transforms us into being more like Jesus. This is wonderful, but there is always the danger of becoming numb to hearing the same old devotions and losing our passion to continue growing stronger in our spiritual development. We hear a lot about being lukewarm, but rarely consider that we are susceptible to its deception. It’s simply a lethargic attitude of going through the motions of religious activity while neglecting our daily quiet time of repentance, worship, and prayer to God.
I’ve been encouraged the last two weeks with the overwhelming response from readers requesting my scripture narration project. It contains me reading over 100 passages of hope, faith, and peace, set to beautiful background music. A few years ago, I felt inspired to create this resource for those who could find somewhere quiet, close their eyes and relax as they absorb the power of God’s promises into their spirits. Again, this doesn’t seem difficult does it? Really? For those of you who declared a new commitment to Christ and rededicated your life back to God on New Years Eve, how’s it going? There is a huge difference between being religious and stepping into the arena of spiritual warfare. This really adds a higher meaning to the saying, “No pain, No gain.”
Yes, our flesh wants a cozy relationship with God, but the closer we are to Him, the more sacrifice and suffering we will endure. This explains why the average religious person remains content to play games where it’s comfortable and safe from conviction and responsibility. My point is that it’s wonderful to purchase books and videos that challenge us with thoughts about being filled with the Holy Spirit, but if we are not going to do what they say, we are continuing to be controlled by our unrenewed mind that wants to keep everything as it is. We can have a Bible on every table and shelf in our home, but if we are not disciplined about studying it for the purpose of casting down our carnality and demonstrating the character of Christ what good are they?
If you desire to accept Jesus as your Lord today, no one is preventing you except your fleshly nature. Our carnality wants us to wait and delay our decision to make a life-changing commitment to Christ, but if not today, when? “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become brand new” II Corinthians 5:17. God is waiting for you.

God’s love is waiting for our love
No matter what the negative naysayers declare about the absence of the love of God, do not allow these dark imaginations to be absorbed into your conscience. Let us accept the fact that after God created the heavens and the earth and everything in it, the Almighty keeps repeating, “And God saw that it was good.” He passionately loved everything He made and still does. Take a moment and read the first chapter of Genesis for yourself. Allow these words to saturate your soul, as you realize He is also talking about you. He created you as one of His finest masterpieces, and for you to not embrace how special and adored you are, means you are refusing to accept spiritual reality.
I want to encourage you today and remind you how highly God thinks of you. Since He is infinite and knows everything that has happened and will happen, consider that He knew and loved you millions of years ago, and knows where you will be millions of years from now. You see, just like a master sculptor, He has been shaping and guiding your steps because He always has your best interest in mind. This includes a unique and perfect plan for you that is filled with hope and peace. You were not made with a cookie cutter on some cosmic assembly line, you are a custom, handcrafted, one of a kind individual who God proclaims is wonderfully made and there will never be anyone exactly like you.
These truths are eternal and what God has promised, no one has the power to prevent. His word is His will, the absolute way, the truth, and the life that gives us the vision and strength to keep walking forward in faith. It’s when we begin to doubt that God is with us, or is not not listening to our cries that we drift into fear and sadness. With all the blessings and covenant assurances Jesus has given to us, He will not force us to walk in the brilliant light of His presence. He will not make us worship and praise Him, or push us down on our knees to cry out to Him. He compels and draws us to come closer, but it is our free will decision to choose how much of His grace we want. He is patient and kind, but within the dynamics of a potential personal relationship with us, He desires and requires for us to love Him enough to do what He says.
When we become desperate to find answers and solutions to our problems, we are usually focused on two things: Our misery and how the damage can be fixed. Our mind has secret ideas that if we can find the right person to confide in, they will have the key that can unlock our frustration and misery and take care of our situation. I understand the human practical reasoning, but we often leave out the most important factor which is listening to God’s thoughts and obeying Him. Most of the time our lack of communicating with Him is what caused our mess in the first place. This is where the lessons of life can be an opportunity to learn and develop spiritual maturity, or we can continue on the merry-go-round of defeat and continue in the independent cycle of rebellion.
Since God created humans, He is the one who knows exactly how we are inside and out. He is never surprised with how we think or what we do. I say this because we are often under the impression that we are getting away with something or sneaking behind His back. He is fully aware of what our motives are and whether we just just want a quick miracle to relieve our situation, or if we have a sincere and aggressive determination to change the way we are living. Yes, you are correct, He already knows our decision. I understand we do not want to hear about our weaknesses and carnality, but He’s not interested in playing games or anyone seeing Him as a genie in a lamp. To accept God’s love makes us feel secure, but doing what He says proves how much we love Him. “Father, I pray for everyone reading this, give them discernment and reveal how you are waiting for their love. We repent for our lukewarmness. Stir a brokenness and conviction within us to find a quiet secret place to pray and worship you today. Amen.”

Making God’s will our highest priority
Are you confident that God is watching you, listening to your words, and searching your heart during times of difficulty or making a request? It’s not that uncommon to hear people say that sometimes they feel their prayers are bouncing off the ceiling and cannot explain why or how this could be happening. These times of spiritual discouragement are fairly common, but it does not mean that our messages are going to voicemail. He is Omnipresent which means He sees and hears everything instantaneously. Others will testify at times they sense God’s tangible presence and believe He is actively intervening. So what makes the difference?
This is a popular question, but I can assure you if there is a communication problem, it’s not on God’s end. He sent His only Son Jesus to restore the relationship that Adam and Eve lost, and of all the blessings He has for us, He wants everyone to know and trust Him more than anything. God would never delete or block our messages because He is angry or disappointed with us. He just wants us to humbly and sincerely ask Him to forgive our sins which helps cleanse our heart and re-establish the intimacy of our relationship. One reason why He might seem distant is because of our disingenuous attitude. He already knows if we are sincerely broken about our sins, but if we are just wanting His help without any intention of becoming more like Him, He is not impressed. Earthly achievements, security, and relationships are a part of life, but according to His list of priorities for us, obeying His voice and abiding in His presence are at the top. If achieving this goal is not what we are passionate about, then no wonder we do not have His peace, joy, or the answers we seek.
Having a personal covenant with a Savior we cannot see can challenge our faith, but this does not mean He does not love you and desires to help you. All He has ever wanted from any of us is our heart. He waits for us to surrender our plans and follow His. He wants to control our thoughts and for us to consult with Him in every decision. To be filled with His Spirit means that He longs to possess us, and sadly we do not hear a lot about this extreme way of thinking anymore. Instead of doing what He says, we have developed our own way of living for Him which includes us doing whatever we want and Him blessing it. We believe we have negotiated a sweet deal, but in reality, we are betraying ourselves. When this is the case, we become victims of self-inflicted deception.
We are beginning a new year and I cannot think of a better time to make some changes. As a writer I love sharing my thoughts about life and many of them are included in this column each week. I’m involved in a ministry at the detention center in my hometown, and I was telling the inmates this week about what a wonderful opportunity it is to allow Christ to guide you into His plans. I realize we rarely think about our spiritual development, but if we do not make serious changes we will probably stay the same. Since we have free will to decide, change comes from the desires within the mind and having faith and courage to see them through. Change the mind, change our destiny. Our mind decides how determined we are to love and serve God. The greatest goal and aspiration would be to know God’s will and to do everything we can to accomplish it.
I’ve been in the ministry since the early eighties and I feel comfortable in the church environment and being with God’s people. I’ve held different positions within the church such as associate pastor, music minister, elder, counselor, teacher, and evangelist, and today I am praying to discover what and where my new assignment will be. I’m currently involved with several local outreach ministry opportunities and know that He is using me for His glory. I believe when we seek first His kingdom we will find God’s perfect will. He works behind the scenes arranging places for all of us to serve, and I’m excited to enter the open door that He is preparing for me. I’m convinced that He influences and persuades while creating divine appointments that serve His purpose for His glory.
